The Biochar Demonstrator is a £4.5M project funded by BBSCR as part of the £30M Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) programme. The Demonstrator will address the uncertainties concerning the extent and scope of deployment of biochar, its stability with respect to carbon sequestration, and to quantify the effects on ecosystem services by establishing the most comprehensive large-scale demonstration programme to date, involving the deployment of over 200 tonnes of biochar.
The Demonstrator is led by the University of Nottingham (Principal Investigator: Prof. Colin Snape) and involves 5 other academic/research institute partners (Universities of Bangor and Leeds, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Forest Research and Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre), with over 10 other project partners spanning biochar production, the agricultural sector and other stakeholders, including local government. The Demonstrator will also act as the focal point for engagement across the academic and wider stakeholder community through a dynamic network and with a Flexible Fund to addresses any research gaps that emerge, targeted at encouraging early career researcher development.
The Demonstrator Project Manager is the primary operational contact point for all the partners and stakeholders and will handle all administration, including the arrangements for all the trials across arable land, woodland/forestry, grassland and contaminated land. Day-to-day activities range from servicing the governance structure, arranging all the stakeholder and networking activities, including meetings and workshops, as well as being the first point of contact for all matters involving the GGR Programme Hub led by the University of Oxford. Other duties include running the Network programme, administrating the flexible fund, managing the web site, the social media presence and collating the information for the monthly news bulletins for all sent Network members.
Applicants should have the ability to fully understand the science, including a strong overall appreciation of climate change and GGR technologies; have experience with working with industry and other stakeholders and the ability to network and display commitment to the development of early career researchers.
This is a full time (36.25 hours) post, fixed term for one year. Job share arrangements may be considered.
