Band 8a Principal Clinical Scientist in MRI

Birmingham, United Kingdom University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job summary

Several exciting opportunities have arisen to join the MRI Physics Team at UHB NHS Foundation Trust, following expansion of our services and a valued member of the team moving on to a leadership position elsewhere. A total of WTE 8a posts are available for experienced and motivated HCPC registered Clinical Scientists, currently structured as one full-time post and one WTE post, although other configurations would be considered. Candidates with less experience who are not yet HCPC registered are encouraged to apply for the band 7 post also available.

We are part of RRPPS, which provides radiation protection and physics services within UHB and to external providers mainly in the Midlands and South West regions. We provide a wide range of MRI physics support for clinical and research activities on 16 "in-house" MRI scanners across the four UHB hospital sites, the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) Imaging Centre and Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, along with approx. 30 MRI scanners across numerous external providers. Current exciting developments include a dedicated paediatric intra-operative scanner and a radiotherapy-planning scanner.

This is an excellent opportunity to take a leadership role within a growing team and to develop your own areas of specialist clinical MR physics support and research interests. Flexible working arrangements and active engagement with regional and national networks are strongly encouraged.

Main duties of the job

To take a lead role as part of the MRI Physics Team in providing a wide range of scientific and technical support for clinical MRI services within UHB and external customers of RRPPS, including:

* Taking a lead in delivering scientific support for one or more specialist areas or advanced applications of MRI in order to deliver service improvements and optimise patient care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

* Providing MR Safety Expert (MRSE) advice and support for scanning patients with implants and devices, conducting safety surveys of MRI facilities, reviewing and developing safety framework documentation for compliance with relevant guidelines and legislation.

* Developing, performing and overseeing routine Quality Assurance and Acceptance Testing (AT) of clinical MRI equipment including data acquisition, analysis and reporting as appropriate.

* Planning and delivering of MR safety and physics training to various staff groups including trainee medical physicists, clinical technologists, radiographers and other imaging staff.

* Active participation and leadership of R&D projects aimed at improving clinical MRI services as agreed with the Lead MRI Physicist.
