Main duties of the job

It is essential that applicants for this role have adepth of understanding and relevant experience in the assessment and managementof minor injuries of both children and adults. Expanded roles such asinfiltration of local anaesthesia and suturing/plastering are desirable. Thepost holder will be able to pick up available shifts to cover vacancies,sickness, annual leave, or unplanned absences and a short induction programmewill be offered to help settle in successful applicants. Rotas are planned severalmonths in advance, so bank shifts can be allocated well in advance, or wherethere is prior knowledge of shortfalls covering the service.

It will be theresponsibility of the post holder, to clinically assess, diagnose and treat allaspects of minor injury presentations, exercising clinical expertise, levels ofjudgment, discretion and clinical decision making as demonstrated under agreedparameters and provide a high standard of autonomous care for patients of allages.

Post holders will beexpected to triage and signpost patients who arrive at the Minor injury unit,with illness presentations. It is expected however, for those patients whopresent as very unwell, emergency interventions are implemented until anambulance arrives. There will also be opportunity to be able to remotely triage forother sites across FCMS on weekend shifts.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

Practice autonomously, as an independent practitioner, participating in the care of and undertaking assessment, diagnosis, treatment / referral, and discharge of patients.

Characteristics:

Provide clinical skills and advice in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of a client group whilst working autonomously

Identify the need for and initiate relevant diagnostic investigations (Xray) within existing protocols. Successful candidates will undertake full IRMER training with the opportunity to spend time with a consulting radiographer. Radiology interpretation will be part of this role and will be facilitated by a hot reporting process as an educational tool.

Clinical - The post holder will:

Have a probationary period of 6 months with a review of performance at 3, and 6 months

Have a 12-month review after commencement date and annual appraisal thereafter

Have mentor support

Assess, treat, and advise patients presenting with minor injuries.

Offer health promotion to patients

Seek specialist support and referral where patients care falls out of their scope of practice

Manage patient flow affectively and safely

Triage illness presenting to the MIU and signpost as necessary

Ensure all practice is safe and effective and remains within boundaries and scope of competence of individuals and to acknowledge limitations.

Perform investigatory procedures, such as referral for x-ray and interpret results accordingly.

Implement expanded roles in minor injury practice (suturing, infiltration of , wound care, complex wound management, FB removal etc).

Manage burns effectively and adhere to local and national policy

Ensure any patient information is up-to-date and produced in appropriate formats

Provide supervision of the clinical team, assisting and developing their team and individuals

Work at an advanced level of practice reflected under the 4 pillars of advanced practice of the HEE.

In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the duties and responsibilities associated with an expert practitioner working within Unscheduled Primary Care.

Develop and maintain clinical/nursing policies, procedures, and protocols.

Professional - The post holder will:
