As our Gynae Bereavement Lead Nurse you will play a vital role in providing emotional support and practical guidance to families who have experienced the loss of a newborn. Working closely with our multidisciplinary team, you will help families navigate their grief journey with compassion, sensitivity, and empathy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a confidential bereavement support service for families, including the emotional support of siblings, around the death of their child.

The role incorporates antenatal support of women and their families, for subsequent pregnancies and will mean that we can provide a seamless services and support for families as the post holder will work closely alongside our midwifery colleagues.

This role will provide guidance and support to multi-disciplinary team and will act as an expert for advice on the bereavement process and support staff to support families.

The post holder will act as an educational resource for staff on physiological, psychology and administrative aspects of bereavement care. The nurse specialist will also provide ongoing supervision and support, participating in the induction and training of the multi-disciplinary team in both formal and informal settings. The post holder will be responsible for organising and facilitating debriefs following clinical events on the unit.

The post holder is expected to work on both the acute site and within community settings such as patient homes, or alternative environments in order to meet the families' needs. The gynae bereavement lead is expected to act as a liaison between the family and other professionals

Job description

Job responsibilities

Be responsible for the coordination of care and support for bereaved women/families who suffer a pregnancy loss under 20 weeks gestation.

Support women through a wide range of treatments and experiences which can be highly distressing and challenging, requiring excellent interpersonal skills due to the highly emotional nature of the cases.

Continually develop and review guidelines in relation to pregnancy loss to achieve best practice.

Work collaboratively with other departments including surgical wards, sonography, emergency department, bereavement office, chaplaincy, mortuary, pathology services, local funeral directors and some bereavement services/charities.

Act as an educational resource and give specialist advice to all staff on physical, psychological, and administrative aspects of bereavement care.

Be responsible for the coordination/implementation of the core principles in relation to the National Bereavement Care Pathway (NBCP) within early pregnancy.

Be the Person Designated to ensure compliance within the recommendations of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) within early pregnancy.

Maintain strong links with support organisations such as The Miscarriage Association, The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, ARC, CRADLE and SiMBA and work closely with the bereavement leads in maternity.

Represent SWFT at local and national bereavement events.

Have direct patient contact, delivering treatment whilst providing care and support in a variety of settings in accordance with the needs of women and their families. This includes within the hospital as an inpatient, outpatient, pre and post discharge.

Registered Nurse/Midwife with significant clinical experience Basic counselling training
