The Vacancy

Newcastle College requires a dedicated, enthusiastic and qualified person to take on the role of Technical Theatre lecturer (with a specialism in Theatre Lighting) within the Performance Academy.

The successful candidate will have a speciality in Theatre Lighting and all aspects of technical theatre.

The successful candidate will have an extensive understanding of theatre processes from a stage management and technical perspective and will be able to teach all aspects of lighting systems, design, rigging, plotting, and operating shows relevant to a range of live Performance events. These will include Drama, Musical Theatre, Dance and Live Music to support FE / HE Productions within our own Peter Sarah Theatre and Music venue and externally within a broad range of regional theatre and music venues. There is an expectation that the applicant will also have knowledge and experience of sound systems within a theatre setting and be able to deliver working practices with hand-held and head mics.

In addition, the awareness and delivery of Health and Safety legislation, and all aspects of risk assessments relating to Live Performance is essential. Technically the candidate should be trained in working at heights, PAT testing, rigging, flying and stage building or be willing to work towards certification in these areas. It is desirable that the applicant have the aptitude to deliver introductory filming and editing skills and the set up and management of video conferencing for live and hybrid events.

The main responsibilities of the role include the delivery and assessment of high-quality programme in Live Performance Technical Production at Level 4 and Level 5 as well as undertaking a range of cohort leadership, tutorial, and programme administration duties. As a cohort leader you will be responsible for; the tracking of student progress against assessments, student wellbeing and the direct link between learners and parents/guardians. Experience of working with learners on a one-one basis and supporting learners in a pastoral context is preferred.

The applicant is required to have experience in planning and assessment for learning, offering engaging lessons that stretch and develop learners, knowledge, skills, and behaviours of the subject. Experience in providing detailed, constructive feedback to support learner progress is beneficial.

The candidate must be qualified to honours degree level (Level 6) or qualified to the industry-recognised standard in a relevant field, hold a post-16 teaching qualification and English and maths qualifications at level 2, or be willing to achieve these within an agreed timeframe.

It is desirable that the candidate has experience of effective programme leadership in FE, HE and / or Apprenticeships and has a proven track record of successful teaching and assessment practice.

An ability to self-manage workload, meet deadlines alongside strong oral and written communication skills and good IT skills are also essential. The hours of work will be flexible and may include evening and weekends according to demand.
