Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Radiology Directorate at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking radiographer who already holds a post graduate certificate qualification in chest +/- abdominal reporting. Applications will also be considered from an experienced Radiographer who is willing to undertake the PG certificate in Medical Imaging at Salford University, these applicants must have been rewarded with a minimum of a 2:1 degree classification in their under graduate Radiography studies.

The successful candidate will integrate into our existing team of 14 dedicated reporting radiographers in projectional Radiography.

The successful candidate will work as an autonomous practitioner within the multidisciplinary team, streamlining the care pathway for patients, undertaking and maintaining high quality radiography within the X-ray department, interpreting chest radiographs and inputting into the further management of patients.

Main duties of the job

To act as an expert practitioner in plain radiographic reporting within an agreed scope of practice according to knowledge and experience and helping the reporting team in delivering an effective radiographic reporting service.

To assist in the establishment of standards and guidelines for best practice and propose changes in procedures and protocols in the department.

To be clinically autonomous and assist a range of radiographers, assistant practitioners, students and ancillary staff in providing a high-quality delivery of the Radiography service.

To be actively involved in the mentoring of post graduate students, teaching for the wider hospital and monitoring quality throughout the Radiology department.

To be actively involved in the departments audit and teaching schedule

Assist in the day to day running of the Radiology department in line with the Directorate management team.

Main Duties

Expert Practice

To act as an expert practitioner in plain radiographic reporting within agreed scope of practice according to knowledge and experience, helping the reporting team in delivering an effective radiographic reporting service in accordance with the agreed reporting protocol. Adapt reporting remit in line with Departmental Service needs. This may include radiographs other than those specified, or training for reporting of other anatomical areas. To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced clinical competencies and knowledge at Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma or Masters level. To assist in the establishment of standards and guidelines for best practice and propose changes in procedures and protocols in the department. To assist a range of radiographers, students and ancillary staff in the delivery of the Radiography service. To provide expert clinical advice in relation to reporting of plain radiographs and support the multidisciplinary team where appropriate. To perform peer review sessions with colleagues. Assess requests for plain radiographic imaging: justifying and/or authorising such requests as appropriate, liaise with Radiology/Radiography colleagues when specialist input, or advice regarding alternative imaging is required. To review images and ensure that supplementary imaging procedures/views are considered prior to patient departure from the Department. Provide a highly specialist clinical service and advice in the form of prompt formal written and verbal reports on plain radiographic studies to the referring clinician. Undertake regular formal reporting sessions to accommodate cross site activity Participate in any future hot reporting services offered by th Radiology department.

Clinical

Function as a key member of the Radiology team. Display evidence of good anatomical, physiological and pathological knowledge to assist in the clinical justification of Radiography referrals To receive, register and be responsible for entering accurate data entry onto the RIS (Radiology Information System), prepare patients for pending examinations and accurately record the destination of the patients radiographs. To act with delegated authority as operator/practitioner and referrer for further imaging within the non-medical referrer protocol under IRMER (2018). To act as a patient advocate in Radiation protection issues. To acquire high standard diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations Patients will have injuries or illness that will require adaptation of technique, utilisation of developed motivational and persuasive skills to acquire correct positioning and reduce mobility to produce an acceptable diagnostic image. To have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of imaging equipment and techniques To review current literature regarding current best practice and suggest change where necessary to the departmental imaging protocols. To ensure all appropriate infection control measures are utilised, paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens. Work as a senior member of a multi-disciplinary team, when undertaking radiographic procedures to provide a high quality of service to patients Be responsible for the delivery of clinical expertise in all aspects of patient care within the department

General

Ensure a high quality of service within the x-ray department. Oversee workflow through department and encourage colleagues and students. To participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and hospital respectively, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment. Be able to exercise personal responsibility and make decisions in unpredictable situations. To attend departmental meetings to comment on departmental related issues. To reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement to the Radiology Management Team. To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patients or departmental need Keep equipment, work areas and accessories clean and tidy. Be aware of all procedures to promote infection control and reduce cross infection. Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on imaging equipment. To perform regular equipment testing and reject analysis, ensuring all results are documented and reported. Ensure continuing familiarisation with the current QA measures in place within the department. To be in involved in departmental QA. To complete all paperwork pertaining to compliance with Trust policies incident forms. Take responsibility for decisions undertaken when using own initiative whenever the situation demands referral to the Child Protection Team if applicable. To demonstrate a wide range of problem solving skills involving allocation of staff due to absence and associated adequate service provision. To conduct examinations according to protocol for a range of clinical trials.

Communication

Communicate highly complex and sensitive information to the patient and referring clinician related to diagnosis. To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. Keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput that might result as a consequence of, for example excessive workload, equipment breakdown, sickness etc. Provide and receive highly complex information which requires empathy and reassurance and often involves overcoming barriers to understanding. Act as clinical interface between outpatient departments and Radiology; helping and offering advice to medical staff, interpreting images and arranging further imaging as necessary. To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers and patient enquiries. To assess and provide specific communication needs of individual patients. Provide information by explanation and demonstration of often-complex procedures and listening to the patients requirements in order to encourage compliance with the imaging process. Some patients will have a barrier to understanding dementia, language barriers, or be unable to communicate. Considering the predominantly unpredictable arrival of patients with communication difficulties, it is often down to the radiographer to develop some sort of improvised dialogue with the patient hand gestures and bodily movements. Provide reassurance as to the necessity of an x-ray examination involving a risk associated with the harmful effect of ionising radiation. To communicate effectively and empathetically with relatives of patients. To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly. Ensure that incidents are reported to the Clinical Services Manager in accordance with trust policy.

Training & Development

Assist in identifying training and education needs of the Radiology reporting team in relation to plain radiograph reporting. Support the education of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Maintain an extensive and contemporary knowledge of plain radiograph reporting by participating in on-going education development and research. Providing complex information to multidisciplinary staff in the form of teaching and lecturing within the Trust. Encourage staff to improve their knowledge and skills and, where possible extend their roles. Provide constructive feedback to staff on the quality of radiographs produced. To monitor the quality of radiographic work. Provide evidence of continual professional development. Assist medical students, junior doctors, ENPs (Emergency Nurse Practitioners), ESP (Extended Scope Physiotherapists), radiographers and student radiographers in their training of reporting. To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of both undergraduate and postgraduate radiographic staff particularly in highly specialist areas. Help promote Radiography initiatives and new radiographic roles. Help develop Radiology services in collaboration with other members of the team. In conjunction with the Clinical Services Manager and Radiologists, actively establish and carry out continual audit programmes in order to evaluate the accuracy of plain radiographic reporting. Develop and undertake regular tutorials in image evaluation with radiology staff and students as part of their CPD/development. As a senior member of the team to offer support, mentoring, advice and ensure the corrective guidance of junior staff, demonstrating an ability to motivate, particularly by example. To participate in the academic programme of the department as required. To actively participate in the departments audit programme. To provide training in the use of clinical equipment for other staff. Advising on appropriate record keeping. To provide elements of induction training and support for other staff. Maintain a commitment to CPD, keeping up to date with latest developments as required for Clinical governance; ensure CPD portfolio is kept up to date.

Organisational Responsibilities

To assume responsibility for managing the Radiology department in the absence of the Departmental Managers. Assist in the establishment and revision of standards and guidelines for best practice.
