Introduction:

Hiscox is hiring a Principal Enterprise Engineer to help enable and shape technology engineering and support the desire to become a truly digital business.

The Hiscox group functions are partnering with our business units and functions to drive alignment, re-use and best practice across the enterprise with the aim of managing complexity, risk and cost and supporting business growth.

About the Principal Enterprise Engineer

As a key member of the Hiscox engineering community, you will be responsible for coordinating across the engineering communities to promote best practices and standardised approaches for a secure, efficient and consistent approach to the software delivery lifecycle (SDLC).

Your overall responsibilities include (but not limited to) the following:

Development and implementation of comprehensive engineering strategies and standards, aligned with the Hiscox’s business objectives, and industry best practices.

Establish communities of practice and chapters and use the forums as a platform to share best practices and drive standardisation and reuse across the organisation.

Support and maintenance of roadmaps and lifecycle of approved engineering tools, frameworks, technologies and techniques.

Enable accelerated delivery through the promotion of standardised, reusable artefacts such as pipelines, infrastructure as code, and test scripts.

Enable innovation through the investigation and trial of new technologies and techniques within technology engineering e.g. artificial intelligence for code creation and review.

Promote standardised non-functional requirement sets to meet availability, scalability, security, regulatory and compliance standards.

Work with the business unit change functions to understand, monitor and report on the performance of software engineering, enabling standard key performance metrics.

Take learnings from existing development and operational support models such as DevOps and SRE and promote and evolve across the organisation.

Establish coding standards to ensure quality outcomes and ensure adherence to best practice.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives withing the organisation including process optimisation, tooling enhancements and workflow automation. Enable frequent and reliable software releases to improve time to market.

Work with information security and compliance to ensure development teams can evidence integrated security practices throughout the SDLC.

Establish monitoring and logging patterns to track health and performance of systems in real time enabling proactive resolution of issues programmatically to enable consistency and repeatability

Candidate Profile

5+ years in a senior engineering or DevOps role coupled with senior stakeholder engagement experience, commercial / financial awareness and proven experience of the tools and techniques that support modern, secure, repeatable and efficient development practices.

Experience of establishing communities of practice or chapters and using the forum as a platform to share best practices and drive standardisation and reuse across the organisation.

Experience with Azure DevOps, Terraform, and tools used throughout the software development lifecycle.

Understanding of integrating Cloud / SaaS applications and legacy applications with a strong understanding on how integration has evolved towards being a digital, cloud and API-driven capability.

Experience with the evaluation and selection of new technologies, including managing proof of concepts or ‘spikes’ to validate if a considered technology is appropriate. 

Worked in mixed vendor, multi-cloud environments.

Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate to both technical and business stakeholders.

Coaching, mentoring and leveraging teams’ competencies / capabilities across the organisation.

Nice to haves:

Previous knowledge/experience of working with Agile delivery methodologies and a Scrum framework.

Experience with agile project management and collaboration tools (e.g. JIRA, Confluence, Miro).
