An exciting opportunity has arisen at South West London Pathology,St. George's NHS Foundation Trust Hospital for Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our Cellular Pathology Department with a focus in Histology.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to work on rotation through our department and to help us continue to deliver exceptional, high-quality integrated care to our patients.

Main duties of the job

We are currently seeking to recruit full-time Band 6 BMS's. They should be enthusiastic, dedicated, hard-working individual and able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work. Appointment will be dependent on experience with the Band 6 post requiring 18 months post HCPC registration. The posts are for hours a post is based at St. Georges' Hospital however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary.Applications are invited from suitably qualified and motivated HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists to join a well-established team within the Histology section of this busy Cellular Pathology department, which has full UKAS Accreditation. The department actively encourages further education and CPD activities. Biomedical scientists within the Histology section will rotate through the laboratory and work with a range of equipment in specialist areas, Digital Pathology, specimen dissection, OSNA, Mohs and Immunohistochemistry .Applicants must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and have post registration experience in a UKAS or IBMS accredited successful candidate will be expected to contribute to an extended working service.

This post is based at St. George's Hospital however the post holder may be required to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when necessary.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

Scientific and Technical Duties

To be proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff. To undertake a range of diagnostic tests and screening procedures through to initial interpretation. To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs, assess that other junior staff are competent and participate in their regular review and update. To undertake technical validation of highly complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures. To carry out corrective action when quality control and assurance procedures indicate loss of performance. To take part in duties without supervision at a level of autonomy requiring decision making but can refer to more senior or medical staff for support. To validate reports where necessary using judgemental expertise. To authorise reports when given the delegated responsibility. Ensure that documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records). Identify and report clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy. To support all diagnostic procedures provided by the department. To contribute towards a culture of quality in the department and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within the department consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation. Organise own work tasks or activities. Ensure all work is completed timely and to satisfactory standards and will seek advice from senior staff when required. Ensure that safe working practises are maintained according to standard operating procedures. To assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science HCPC Registration Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline Excellent working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline Evidence of continuing professional development Knowledge of health and safety issues Experience of quality management systems

Skills and Abilities

Essential

Practical specialist analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software Accuracy and attention to detail Able to follow written methodologies or protocols Able to work as part of a team Able to work pressure Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work Intermediate level of computer skills Excellent communication and presentation skills Use of enhanced pathology computer systems
