The post holder will be the lead nurse for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) working within the respiratory department and working alongside the respiratory consultants and allied healthcare professionals to provide clinical management and professional leadership in the delivery and development of respiratory services.

The post holder will work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote, develop and evaluate the clinical respiratory service within Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust thus ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

This post requires the successful applicant to be self-motivated with excellent organisational skills, a strong team working ethic and evidence of continual professional development. The post holder will clinically lead the new Interstitial Lung Disease service, within the respiratory department, working alongside the respiratory consultants and allied healthcare professionals to provide clinical management and professional leadership in the delivery and development of respiratory services. The post holder will work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote, develop and evaluate the clinical respiratory service within Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust thus ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care. The post holder will be responsible for, and including all matters relating to The post holder will be working across a variety of hospital settings including outpatient nurse led respiratory clinics, administration of biologics for all patients delivering patient care and education and clinical support of staff. Supporting the new Acute Respiratory Virtual ward. Nurse-led clinics starting and titrating medications, monitoring bloods, including phlebotomy, and acting on results. Telephone clinics and responding to telephone enquiries.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To work within an extended and expanding role, providing holistic, individualised approach for assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation, practicing within agreed guidelines and protocols to deliver high quality patient services. Initiate and develop nurse led services within defined protocols, working closely with primary care and the new Acute Respiratory Virtual ward, ensuring that high standards of nursing care are set and maintained within the respiratory service, monitoring through audit, feedback and review. Professionally run and coordinate a nurse led respiratory clinic providing expert advice and develop individualised treatment plans where prescribing is appropriately tailored to an accurate ILD respiratory diagnosis. Within the field of expertise, and organisational policy, request specific clinical tests to establish a diagnosis. Take part in the delivery of ILD services to patients. Linking up with ED to monitor and review frequent attendees and providing outpatient reviews for all ED attendees and hospital inpatients at 4 weeks as per the guidelines. To conduct an outpatient clinics for patients with ILD and provide education and care liaising with other clinical staff in line with evidenced based standards and national guidelines. Continue to provide the best evidenced based care for patients with ILD and liaise with tertiary sites and primary care to develop local services and optimum care in hospital and the community. To provide quality care to patients with ILD whilst in hospital and continue the excellent links between secondary and primary care together providing a seamless journey within the Walsall respiratory service. Participating in the acute respiratory virtual ward MDT each morning with members of the multidisciplinary team. To comply with all audit of ILD admissions. To tailor care as per recognised evidence-based recommendations. To work towards KPI achievement in national benchmarking.

Leadership and Staff Management Responsibilities.

Practice as a professional nurse with confidence, authority and expertise, and promote professionalism within the respiratory nursing team. To have advanced leadership skills. Undertakes staff appraisals yearly and ensure all staff have agreed objectives, personal development plans and are compliant with mandatory training. Coordinate and monitor all nursing staff leave annual leave, sickness and study. Actively be involved with service development within the respiratory service. To undertake audit and produce service reports to disseminate amongst staff and in the monthly respiratory service meetings. To professionally coordinate a respiratory nurse budget and have awareness of effective use of resources and cost implications demonstrated by optimising staff rotas and effective use of stationery / equipment within the service. Participate in the update and continual assessment of clinical protocols and policies for the diagnosis, treatment and management of respiratory patients. Be able to prioritise own workload daily with excellent administration skills and coordinate the respiratory nurse team.
