This role will be based at our Grange Village and Oaklands sites in Newnham-on-Severn and Taurus Crafts in Lydney, and you must be able to travel to these locations. There will be travel required between locations as part of your role.
Duties & Responsibilities
Main responsibilities:
- Working under the direction of the Day Opportunities Lead to make sure meaningful opportunities within the day opportunities are provided to people we support and, where appropriate, support the obtaining of qualifications and learning, development and progression and the promotion of the activities to potential new referrals.
- Ensure that all people we support have risk assessments and support planning as appropriate to take part in and meaningfully contribute to the workshop activity, and have the opportunity to experience variety and progression.
- Carry out any preparation as designated/ requested by the day opportunities leads. Supporting the lead to prepare materials and finish work as required.To plan, prepare and deliver projects with individuals, tailored to individual needs, abilities and goals to create a variety of products and production items. Supporting individuals to engage in session activities and benefit from their time there.
- Work within the Gloucestershire Communities Day Opportunities to meet the operational needs of the Charity. Most shifts will involve providing cover for leads and other members of the Day Opportunities team during periods of absence eg. annual leave, short term sickness absence or training.
- To be accountable for and take responsibility for applying your learning, training and skills to support people in a way that embodies great interactions through person centred thinking and planning using people preferred method of communication.
- Ensure the Day Opportunity operates, where practicable, in accordance with the Trust’s ethos and provides produce of high quality within the production timescales necessary to meet the needs of the community and for retail purposes and (with social care and other funding and retail sales and taking into account its operating costs including staff costs) financially at least covers its costs (or meets the operating deficit/surplus requirements agreed each year), and plan the work schedules and activities, promote the produce and service, and plan for the workshop’s development accordingly.
- Support the Day Ops Lead to ensure that all working practices are within the appropriate policies, procedures, practices and controls (identifying and putting in place any that are necessary for the workshop) and that appropriate recording and reporting arrangements are used to support and evidence the meeting of the Trust’s, contractual and regulatory requirements, having particular regard to health and safety requirements.
- Maintain records as directed by the Day Ops Lead and support them to ensure information is kept in an orderly manner, and on a timely basis, provide any information and documentation required. Provide assistance to leads with session activity report preparation.
- Undertake such other tasks as required individually or with others to develop and maintain the high quality of service required to fulfil the vision of the community, including for example by actively participating in regular team meetings and in relevant training and supporting festivals and other community events.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- A positive attitude is necessary towards our model of providing care and support to vulnerable people within the setting of an intentional community.
- Working with adults with learning disabilities and/or volunteers within the charitable sector.
- Experience and knowledge of the workshop area; pottery, woodwork, baking, cooking, sewing, crafts and gardening.
- Ability to work within a team.
- Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills and openness towards other people’s thoughts and ideas.
- Reasonable general education (including evidence of numeracy and literacy).
- Reliable and organised.
- Basic computer skills.
Desirable
- Experience of teaching or delivering group activities.
- Experience in supporting adults to learn and develop in two or more of the following – weaving, crafts, pottery, woodwork, bakery or gardening and knowledge of supporting in a craft / food or land based workshop.
- A willingness to work outdoors.
- Experience of preparing food in a commercial environment or large-scale catering, with knowledge of Food Safety standards.
- Previous experience of working within an activity based or social care setting, ideally with adults with learning disabilities.
- At least three years previous experience of working within a care or support setting, ideally with adults with learning disabilities, with at least one year at a more senior level.
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent, or willingness to work towards this.
- Specific qualification relating to day opportunities environment.
