An Apprenticeship is a job with training to support your career development to enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for the role. Successful candidate(s) will be employed by Queen’s University Belfast and will work towards a recognised qualification as part of the role.

The completion of your apprenticeship training will be a condition of your contract of employment. As a member of Queen’s staff, you will be entitled to all the same staff benefits as other members of staff.

Becoming an IT apprentice at Queen’s University Belfast is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and training. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, whilst learning on the job and appropriate objectives will be set during the apprenticeship. At the same time, you will study for formal IT qualifications and be paid to do so.

We are looking for passionate and motivated team members who are interested in learning new skills and technologies, and a positive attitude towards the provision of exceptional customer service in a demanding IT environment They will be people persons, polite, approachable and welcoming, able to talk to customers face to face, over the phone or via electronic medium. They will be confident, able to build strong relationships with team members and customers. The successful candidate(s) will be team players, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task while working under pressure to achieve tight deadlines. They will also be required to demonstrate initiative and have a pro-active ‘can do’ approach to their work and professional development.

The role

You will work as an Apprentice Computer Assistant. You will be required to complete a two-year training programme that will cover all aspects of the role and will be delivered through in-house training, LinkedIn Learning, other learning methods as well as day/evening-release delivered by Belfast Metropolitan College.

You will complete an IT Apprenticeship Level 3 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in either Networking Infrastructure or Software Development and will gain ICDL, ICDL Advanced, PRINCE 2 Foundation, ITIL v4 Foundation, CISCO Cybersecurity Essentials, Google IT Support Professional Certificates.

Achievement of these qualifications will be assessed by verification through the appropriate awarding body. IT Apprentices must complete competence-based qualifications, knowledge-based qualifications and any necessary Essential Skills qualifications (as directed by Belfast Metropolitan College) as essential requirement(s) of this Apprenticeship. 

The Digital and Information Services (DIS), IT Service Desk provides a single point of contact for users to make requests, raise queries, report incidents or log complaints relating to IT services, by offering a professional IT support service to all our users across the University. We fix things so users can do their work. Every day is different and presents new challenges. If you like dealing with problems and have an interest in IT this is the job for you. 

Successful candidates are required to work 4 days a week in the Department in Digital and Information Services at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and attend college one day a week during term time and work 5 days a week in the office at QUB at other times. The normal hours of work are 37 hours per week, excluding meal breaks. There is a requirement to provide cover after 5pm and over weekends in a shift pattern - which will attract an additional 15% shift allowance payment. On successful completion of the two-year apprenticeship, you will move to permanent Computer Assistant role.

We are recruiting two (2) Apprentice Computer Assistants who will complement our fourteen strong team. It may be possible to gain higher qualifications Level 5 (Foundation Degree) or Level 6 (BSc Hons) qualifications (depending on program).

This is an exciting time in Queen’s, we are undergoing a digital transformation programme of work which will revolutionise our IT services, join us on our journey.

Location

The posts will be based in Queen's University Belfast main campus, University Road, Belfast.

As these posts are based on campus and are face-to-face roles the opportunity to work remotely is not possible.

Performance Expectations - Year 1

By the end of Year 1 the Apprentice Computer Assistant will:

Have identified with line management the skills that need to be developed and agreed goals to be achieved in their Programme of Development Year 1. Be highly familiar with the systems and services in their area and their key functionality. Know how projects are managed within the area and be familiar with core project documentation and plans. Have assisted in analysing problems and inputting into the design and development of possible solutions. Have built a rapport with key staff members in the team. Have passed the necessary assessments as part of their course in Belfast Metropolitan College

Performance Expectations - Year 2.

By the end of Year 2 the Apprentice Computer Assistant will:

Have reviewed their Programme of Development Year 1 progress and identified with line management the skills that need to be developed and agreed goals to be achieved in their Programme of Development Year 2. Be confident in carrying out analysis of requirements with a range of stakeholders and producing specifications. Have taken the lead in offering advice and support on agreed aspects of systems/services. Be capable of analysing and troubleshooting problems and designing and developing solutions. Fully integrated into their team with a defined role. Have passed the necessary assessments as part of their course in Belfast Metropolitan College
