Laboratory Technician

Key Responsibilities
- Collecting and analysing incoming material, in-process samples and cement finished products. This includes co-ordination with depots, weighbridge and production workgroups
- Reporting all test data in a timely and accurate way
- Ensuring all laboratory testing is conducted according to the relevant standards, both internal and external, to a high level of precision and accuracy
- Assisting the laboratory supervisor with managing customer requests and ensuring they are dealt with in a timely manner
- Assisting in the first level inspection and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including laboratory reagents. The role also includes basic learning and operation of the automatic laboratory sampling system
- Assisting in the calibration of laboratory equipment
- Ensuring good laboratory practices are maintained including COSHH and housekeeping
- Maintain sample storage, sample retains and relevant records
- Working with external auditors for the product certification scheme for sampling and testing
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant statutory legislation and internal company policies
Skills, Knowledge & ExpertiseQualifications:
- Minimum 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 to include English, Maths and Science
- A-levels in sciences (BSc - desirable)
- IOSH working safely - desirable
- Previous laboratory experience would be beneficial, particularly in materials science or construction
- Basic Microsoft Office experience
- Data handling and reporting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with personnel at all levels in the business
- Working with other team members to organise workload effectively
- The ability to manage data and transpose information with accuracy
- Attention to detail
- Experience in a variety of laboratory testing techniques
- Basic knowledge of core IT systems, including MS Word, Outlook & Excel
- Managing chemical reagents safely and responsibly
- Ability to problem solve
- Basic understanding of British Testing Standards or equivalent
- A basic understanding of business management systems including relevant Standards e.g. ISO 14001, ISO45001 & ISO 9001
- Previous experience of working with external auditors
- Basic cement manufacturing would be desirable
- Flexible attitude towards work including day to day activities and occasional shift changes/cover
