Job summary

This is a training position and will suit an individual who might have been considering completing their Health and Social Care training in college.

This is an opportunity to undertake training, whilst experiencing the job you are being trained for.

You will be given 6 hrs a week to undertake study once enrolled onto your course. It is expected you will have completed all elements of the training prior to the end of the 18 month fixed term contract.

There is a 12 hour shift pattern predominantly Monday -Friday

The service cares for children and young people from birth to 18 years and for this reason you must be 18 years of age to apply for this post.

Main duties of the job

You will be working on Alice Ward, which is a 16 bedded Orthopaedic Children's ward that cares for children requiring orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, as well as a weekly community dental list. The children's outpatient department runs both orthopaedic and general children's clinics and you will assist in the smooth running of these outpatient clinics.

We would expect you to have good communication skills, and a genuine interest in supporting children in a hospital environment.

As part of your training you will be taught how to care for the child before and after their operation, as well as encouraging and supporting the children and their parents throughout their rehabilitation. The facilitation of play is key in most situations, as it assists with distraction and facilitates motivation in their rehab.

You will work alongside all members of the multidisciplinary team, which will include nurses, physio's, the play team and housekeepers to name a few.

This is a training position for a children's Apprentice Health Care Assistant, and offers an opportunity to work within the NHS and gain the knowledge and fundamental skills required to provide good quality patient care, whilst achieving the Skills for Heath Care Certificate, which is reflected in the rates of pay.

Ideally you will have a level 2 in English and Maths, however this can also be obtained whilst undertaking the course.
