Learning Support Assistant

Support Worker Role, 1:1, based within a Primary School.
Teaching Personnel are working closely with a Primary School to hire an experienced support worker to specifically to work 1:1 with a pupil who is a wheelchair user. The role involves a combination of practical assistance, educational support, and emotional encouragement. Here's an overview of the key responsibilities and skills required for this role:
Key Responsibilities:
Mobility Assistance:
Help the pupil navigate the school environment, including moving between classrooms, accessing playgrounds, and participating in school activities.
Assist with transitions, such as moving from the wheelchair to a chair or from one place to another, if necessary.
Personal Care:
Support the pupil with any personal care needs, which may include toileting, dressing, or feeding, depending on their level of independence.
Maintain the pupil's dignity and privacy at all times.
Educational Support:
Assist the pupil in participating fully in classroom activities, ensuring they can engage with learning materials and tasks.
Provide 1:1 support during lessons, adapting materials or tasks if necessary to meet the pupil's specific needs.
Work closely with the teacher to implement any Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or special accommodations.
Emotional and Social Support:
Encourage social interaction with peers, helping the pupil to feel included in group activities.
Provide emotional support and encouragement, helping the pupil to build confidence and self-esteem.
Act as an advocate for the pupil's needs within the school environment.
Communication with Staff and Parents:
Maintain regular communication with teachers, special education coordinators, and parents about the pupil's progress and any challenges.
Attend meetings as required to discuss the pupil’s needs and progress.
Skills and Qualifications:
Experience in a Similar Role: Previous experience working with children, particularly those with physical disabilities, is highly desirable.
Knowledge of Disability and Inclusion: Understanding the challenges faced by wheelchair users and how to create an inclusive environment.
Patience and Compassion: The ability to support the pupil with empathy, patience, and understanding.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills to interact effectively with the pupil, staff, and parents.
Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust support strategies as the pupil's needs change.
Basic First Aid: Ideally, the support worker should have basic first aid training, especially in handling situations related to the pupil’s specific health needs.
This role is crucial in ensuring that the pupil can fully participate in school life, access the curriculum, and develop socially and emotionally in a supportive and inclusive environment.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
