Job summary

RMN/RNLD/Social Work - Health and Justice Custody Team, Staffordshire (Watling House Custody Suite).

Why work in Police Custody? No doubt you will have seen many adverts telling you of the uniqueness of the role that they are offering you. However, working as a Health and Justice Practitioner is a job role as unique as you will find in the NHS.

You will be working with some of the most marginalised patients in society as they come into contact with Police Custody as part of their criminal justice journey. Working alongsidethe services user, police, Crown Prosecution Services, probation, Mental Health services and third sector agencies to name a few of people and organisations that work in Police Custody to get the best health outcome for the individual.

Police vetting is required for this post, applicants must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years to apply for this.

Main duties of the job

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for Band 6 Practitioner with criminal justice interest. The Staffordshire Health & Justice Service, formerly known as Liaison and Diversion Service is based in Police Custody suites in Watling House (Gailey) and Northern Area Custody (Stoke).

This includes providing high quality assessments and supporting people coming into contact with the criminal justice service. The unique service is delivered to people of all ages, with any vulnerability including but not limited to; mental health, physical health, learning disability, substance misuse, unemployment, housing, educational needs etc.

The successful applicants must be highly motivated and looking for a new challenge and possessing the skills to make a difference.

POLICE CUSTODY WORKING:

Key tasks include:

Arranging appropriate support for services users and liaise with professionals within the criminal justice system. Completion of assessments within custody and supporting Navigators in screening, Checking health records to aid triage and identify vulnerabilities Onward referrals to services required to meet individual's needs, Ensuring all relevant agencies are informed of needs and risks for individuals, Point of contact for professionals based in Police Custody

Take responsibility for specialist assessment (within service specification) in Liaison and Diversion in conjunction with service user and carer, helping to promote self-determination, choice and autonomy.

To provide written reports for Crown or Magistrates Courts or to attend and give verbal evidence as required. To offer considered recommendations to these bodies.

Responsible for participating in the setting of quality standards, including the auditing, monitoring and reviewing of practice in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy.

Assess patient's individual care needs, agree and refer on to appropriate agency.

Complete and contribute, where appropriate to robust risk assessments and risk management plans. Deliver and promote positive risk taking, where appropriate, to improve quality of life and maximise occupational performance/independence.

Maintain an effective reporting system by observing and reporting verbally and in writing on patient conditions.

Utilise agreed outcome measures to review the effectiveness of process, as part of Health and Justice Service.

Participate in the development of the service to ensure clinical governance processes are actively implemented at team level.

Assist in ensuring that the aims and objectives of the service (as set by the Team Leader) are fulfilled and to identify factors which may inhibit these from being achieved.

Assist in the implementation of evidence-based practice and participate in research and other projects as required.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

Registered Mental Health Nurse / Learning Disability Nurse on NMC Register. Registered OT, Speech and Language Therapist or Social Worker. Post-registration experience, evidence of formal courses and training at diploma/degree level.

Desirable

BSc degree in nursing or equivalent level Qualification in providing supervision Qualification in coaching

EXPERIENCE

Essential

Evidence of extensive post registration experience with working with Clients Experience of working with Clients who have difficulty in engaging with services and have complex mental health needs Experience of integrating care delivery across multi-disciplinary /multi agency teams

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Essential

Knowledge of the Mental Health NICE Guidelines Knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct Demonstrate understanding of Equality and Anti-discriminatory practice

Desirable

Skilled in utilising specific assessments and outcome measures including; GAD7, PHQ9, CAARMS, PANNS, SWEMWBS, Lunsers, GASS
