A new and exciting opportunity to join our Legal and Governance team (LeGo) as a Legal Counsel.

Are you ready to take on a role where your legal expertise meets groundbreaking research? Join us at Sanger Institute. We are seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel to drive our research-related agreements and strategic projects to new heights.

As our Legal Counsel, you'll be at the forefront of drafting, negotiating, and advising on a diverse array of agreements crucial to our research endeavours. From collaboration agreements to technology transfers, you'll navigate complex legal landscapes with confidence, autonomy, and a keen eye for detail.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Draft, negotiate, and provide legal advice on research-related agreements
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, influencing the direction of scientific programmes.
  • Provide legal support to various functional teams, from Finance to Procurement.
  • Lead strategic projects aimed at enhancing contractual processes and documentation
  • Stay informed about legal developments, sharing insights to keep our Legal team ahead of the curve.
  • Mentor and potentially manage junior members of the Legal team, fostering growth and excellence.

Essential Skills
  • Enthusiasm for our organisation's charitable mission and focus on scientific research
  • Qualified as a solicitor in the UK (or equivalent in other jurisdictions)
  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating contracts
  • Significant experience of applying legal expertise to business problems in a complex and dynamic setting
  • Demonstrable ability to give advice that strikes an appropriate balance between risk and benefits
  • Strong communicator with effective project management and/or time management skills
  • Demonstrable ability to present ideas articulately and to effectively convey legal concepts to non-lawyers
  • Ability to work well with a wide range of people (from scientists and academics to finance and operational professionals)
  • "Can-do" attitude focused on looking for solutions
  • Positive and enthusiastic with a flexible approach

About the Team:

The Legal portion of the LeGo team covers both scientific and operational teams. The Legal Team is responsible for drafting and negotiating all agreements related to our activities, including all of our varied research collaborations, projects and materials transfers. The team also has expertise in a host of additional areas, such as providing support on data protection and confidentiality, data release via EDAM and legal queries

Other Information:
  • Full or part time applications welcome
  • 2-3 days office based
  • Salary in the region of £63,000 to £83,000 (final salary package dependent on skills and experience)
