This position ensures the client provides top-tier computing capabilities to its researchers and partners, including commercial entities.

This role is part of the Research Computing Platforms/HPC team, which collaborates closely with research labs and technology platforms across the organization. The team operates within the Infrastructure and Cloud Platforms group of the IT Office, presenting excellent opportunities for cross-technology collaboration.

The client currently maintains a substantial on-premise IBM Spectrum Scale high-performance storage system, complemented by offsite backups and a long-term archive service. They are also developing a hybrid system that integrates on-site and cloud solutions. Additionally, they utilize HPC clustering to enhance their computational capabilities. The Senior Engineer will play a pivotal role in improving these computing platforms to support the client’s Research Data Management Strategy.

Key responsibilities of the role include leading the design and delivery of data platforms, mentoring junior team members, and collaborating with other IT teams. The Senior HPC Engineer will also manage storage systems, including IBM Spectrum Scale, monitor system performance, automate tasks, and produce documentation. They are expected to support operational and project work, creating reports for management and stakeholders.

The role also involves systems engineering, where the engineer will implement proof-of-concept systems, integrate scientific instruments with data platforms, and share solutions with the wider community. Staying current with technological advancements and best practices is crucial for this role.

Additionally, user support is a significant part of the job. The Senior HPC Engineer will develop documentation, provide training, deploy applications on various platforms, and offer guidance on research computing platforms. They will also support colleagues by addressing known issues and offering solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in high-performance storage systems, including IBM Spectrum Scale, HPC clustering, and Unix/Linux systems administration. Strong communication skills, time management, and attention to detail are essential. Experience with virtualization, cloud infrastructure, and modern computing applications is desirable, along with a background in computational research or equivalent professional experience.
