Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 Trainee Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) for Colposcopy, full time positions within the Gynaecology outpatient team at MidYorkshire NHS Teaching Trust.

The successful candidates will work closely with the Lead Consultant and the multi disciplinary team on both the Pontefract and Dewsbury sites.

The individuals will undertakethe recognised BSCCP colposcopy course developing the skills and knowledge tobecome an autonomous practitioner undertaking nurse-led colposcopy clinics toensure all women requiring colposcopy, biopsy and treatment proceduresexperience an efficient, quality service whilst demonstrating a supportive,sensitive and approachable manner.

The individuals will be supported by the CNS for colposcopy and medical ideal candidates will have initiative and drive and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Main duties of the job

Provide an evidence-based specialist nursingservice, which is responsive to users needs, to a cohort of patients referredto the specialist service/MDT

Work clinically for 80% of the roledemonstrating advanced practice skills in the holistic assessment, planning,implementation and evaluation of care for the cohort of patients within thespecialist service

Manage a cohort of patients and prioritiseworkload to meet patient and service need

Undertake clinical competencies relevant to thisspecialist service to demonstrate expertise in extended nursing roles

Facilitate and co-ordinate the process ofinformed choice for patients in the provision of treatment and care

Act as a patient advocate to guide treatment andcare decisions to ensure that patients individual needs are expressed andvalued

Advise on thecomplex disease and symptom management for patients within the speciality

Act as a resource for health care professionals

Work autonomouslyin the development and delivery of nurse led or parallel clinics

Co-ordinate the patient care pathway

Demonstrate advanced empathetic interpersonaland communication skills

Effectively and sensitively communicate highlycomplex and sensitive information

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide an evidence-based specialist nursingservice, which is responsive to users needs, to a cohort of patients referredto the specialist service/MDT. Care will reflect current local protocols and nationalguidelines and will be delivered through face-to-face consultation or viatelephone communication on a day-to-day basis.

Work clinically for 80% of the roledemonstrating advanced practice skills in the holistic assessment, planning,implementation and evaluation of care for the cohort of patients within thespecialist service. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy,using analytical and judgemental skills in undertaking differential diagnosisto ensure the delivery of appropriate care, in accordance with the BSCCP/NHSCSPguidelines.

Manage a cohort of patients and prioritiseworkload to meet patient and service need.

Undertake clinical competencies relevant to thisspecialist service to demonstrate expertise in extended nursing roles. Assessand effectively manage individual psychological reactions to diagnosis,treatment and associated side effects of including risk of cervical cancer,perception of sexually transmitted disease and future fertility

Facilitate and co-ordinate the process ofinformed choice for patients in the provision of treatment and care. Ensurethat individual care plans are understood.

Act as a patient advocate to guide treatment andcare decisions to ensure that patients individual needs are expressed andvalued.

Advise on thecomplex disease and symptom management for patients within the speciality inboth the inpatient and outpatient settings. Evaluate response to interventionsand advise on the adaptation of management.

Act as a resource for health care professionalsworking within the Trust and primary care, providing specialist professionaladvice and support.

Work autonomouslyin the development and delivery of nurse led or parallel clinics in line withNational guidance and local service need.

Co-ordinate the patient care pathway, ensuringtimely referrals are made to members of the multidisciplinary and treatmentteams. This will include receiving direct referrals to the specialist nursingservice from medical and nursing staff within the Trust and in primary care.

Demonstrate advanced empathetic interpersonaland communication skills in supporting, informing and advising patients andcarers through diagnosis, treatment, disease progression, prognosis andsupportive and palliative care where applicable. This will involve frequentlyimparting significant news or supporting patients and carers during andfollowing such consultations.

Effectively and sensitively communicate highlycomplex and sensitive information to emotionally distressed patients andfamily/carers at key points in the care pathway on a frequent basis.

Use advanced communication skills to provideverbal and written information to patients and their families/carers, in atimely manner specific to their individual needs.

As a core member of the Multidisciplinaryprovide professional advice to patients, relatives, primary care staff, juniormedical and nursing staff, and other outside agencies and liase with medicalclinicians, laboratory staff, administrative and clerical staff and cancerservices.

Refer to other health professionals and outsideagencies to ensure optimum care and ongoing support for individualpatients/carers, and to ensure the seamless transition from primary to secondarycare appropriate to patients individual needs and circumstance.

Maintain links with local and nationalorganisations, which support the care of patients within this speciality.
