Research Fellow in Archaeology of Cult Landscapes

To be a responsible for conducting research and fieldwork at major royal, ritual and religious centres of later prehistoric and 1st Millennium AD Ireland, as a part of the Cult Landscapes project in Archaeology and Palaeoecology, School of Natural and Built Environment QUB, and to contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to high-quality publications and project impacts.

This post is a part of the Cult Landscapes Project led by PI Dr Patrick Gleeson and partly funded through a grant from the Leverhulme Trust. This project builds from on-going work at Navan Fort to develop similar programmes of field research and base-line datasets for comparable cult centres in later prehistoric Ireland.

Successful applicants will have responsibilities in independent and collaborative research in the project area, leading fieldwork, planning and excavation at select Cult Landscapes, assisting the PI in publication and database analysis, day to day data management and synthesis, collaborations, and outreach.

About the person:

Candidates should have a Postgraduate degree at PhD Level in Archaeology or closely related area, with cognate expertise. Knowledge of the archaeology of Later Prehistoric, Iron Age and/or early medieval archaeology of North-western Europe is desirable.

To conduct research within later prehistoric and early medieval archaeology, focusing on fieldwork, remote sensing, GIS and targeted excavation at major cult landscapes. To assist in developing archaeological datasets for Cult Landscapes in first-millennium AD Ireland, and for comparable sites elsewhere in northern Europe as directed by PI. To undertake advanced GIS and remote sensing (geophysical survey) survey at targeted case study landscapes. To assist in planning, and where appropriate, delivery and write-up of evaluation excavations at select case studies. Carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations of existing datasets, and to review and synthesise existing literature within this field. Produce high quality research outputs consistent with project aims and commensurate with career stage. This will include collaborating and co-authoring with PI (as appropriate) on outputs. In consultation with the project team, promote research milestones and outputs at national and international conferences and through social media (where applicable). Assist grant holder in the preparation of funding proposals and applications to external bodies. • Carry out occasional educational supervision, demonstrating or lecturing duties within the post holder’s area of expertise and under the direct guidance of a member of academic staff. Undertake supplementary duties relevant to the success of the project including administrative duties and additional training and development activities as required.
