Teddington, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time

About the Role

Whether you’re talking about length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount or the brightness of light, the National Physical Laboratory sets the standards by which these things are all measured. At NPL, we touch ordinary lives in extraordinary ways and you could too.

Research is at the heart of all we do. In this vital role, you’ll help carry out a variety of technical activities that will help us resolve problems we’ve identified, to achieve positive outcomes. It’s very much a team effort. And whilst there’ll be a number of pre-determined activities, we’ll expect you to be proactive too – spotting commercial opportunities along the way. It’s also important that you strive to deepen your subject matter knowledge, sharing this as you go so that everyone benefits – championing your work and its importance. All of which you’ll complete on time, within budget and to the highest standards.

NPL's world-leading Radiotherapy and Radiation Dosimetry group provides world-class research, calibrations, specialised measurement services and training for the dosimetry of ionising radiation in cancer therapy, industrial sterilisation of medical devices and pharmaceuticals, and radiation protection. This is an exciting opportunity for a permanent position as an Assistant Scientist (or Scientist, depending on qualifications and experience) at the National Physical Laboratory. A successful applicant would assist in the development and delivery of a range of medical and radiation protection related measurement services both on-site at Teddington making use of our own state-of-the-art facilities and also off-site at various Medical Physics Departments in UK hospitals.

About You

Applicants should possess a degree in the physical sciences although alternative qualifications and experience may be considered. More importantly, the successful candidate must have excellent attention to detail, good written and oral communication skills, be a team player, enthusiastic, conscientious, a quick learner and be adept at solving a wide range of practical problems. The successful candidate may be required to work off-site for periods of time and may be required to work during evenings and weekends on occasion. They would ideally hold a valid UK driving licence.

At NPL we learn from each other, respect each other and work together to do better, for ourselves and for our customers. And whilst we’re always looking to stretch beyond what we know, we don’t make things more complicated when there’s no need.
