Job summary

Our thriving and dynamic Gastroenterology department is based at Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary, and is part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA).

This is a unique and exciting time to join an NHS service that is focused on delivering the best healthcare services to our local population, demonstrated by recent investment in an award winning Community Diagnostic Centre in Oldham (CDC), away from the acute site. This state of the art modular build has PET-CT (to be upgraded to one of the first digital PET CT scanners in the country), MR, CT, Ultrasound and physiological testing.

It has been the focus of national attention and has been visited by the Prime Minister, Professor Sir Mike Richards and the National Clinical Director for Elective care. It recently won two HSJ Partnership awards and has featured in National news articles about diagnostics.

In Autumn 2024 the Community Diagnostic Centre will be enhanced further by a co-located 3 room endoscopy unit with clinical rooms and on-site decontamination. Our ambition at the CDC is to transform the way that we traditionally deliver healthcare and to explore new and innovative delivery models that reflect the needs of both our staff and our patients.

Your patients will potentially undergo diagnostic endoscopy, physiological and radiological staging in one visit. There cannot be a better time to join our team.

Main duties of the job

Alongside the CDC, there are 3 endoscopy units across 3 sites (Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary) making this one of the largest endoscopy services in the country. The Endoscopy service offers NHS Bowel Cancer screening programme colonoscopy, ERCP, HPB, EUS, advanced Lower GI EMR/ ESD are delivered within the Trust.

With the expansion of our endoscopy service, we are looking to recruit a Consultant Endscopist to help deliver the highest quality Endoscopy service to our local population. Team members within the service will have the opportunity to influence the development of services.

Qualifications & Conditions

Essential

Registration on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology, General Surgery (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT) MBBS or equivalent medical qualification MRCP or equivalent medical or surgical qualification Hold a license to practice To be formally recognised as Clinical Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards

Desirable

Post Graduate Degree MD, PhD, MSc To be formally recognised as Educational Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards

Experience and clinical skills

Essential

Must be able to demonstrate that they have achieved the BSG and JAG endoscopy quality standards relating to diagnostic and therapeutic Upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. , JAG accreditation or equivalent for these procedures Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to Gastroenterology/GIM problems Specialist knowledge and experience in order to manage, supervise and/or offer expert clinical opinion on the management of a range of gastroenterology problems both emergency and elective within speciality including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy Understanding current issues within endoscopy and the future direction of the specialty Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Acute Medicine curriculum and applying to this post Attendance at a recognised management course Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses Good understanding of Clinical Governance

Development of specialist/ sub specialist areas within endoscopy: candidates will be supported to develop an interest in one or more of the following and therefore will potentially have advanced skills in one of the following: ERCP/ EUS, Advanced Lower GI polypectomy
