Marine Engineer

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of the marine engineer role is to ensure the machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and marine diesel engine systems are maintained to the highest of standard. It requires the person to follow procedures from the Marine SMS which will make certain that tasks are completed with in a required time frame and to the safest level. The engineer will assists in vessel daily operations under the masters instruction.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is an important role within GRS, with primary responsibility to:

• Operate machinery in a safe manner following the company procedures in the Marine SMS.
• Carrying out both conditioned and time-based maintenance as per the vessel planned maintenance system. Systems include but are not limited to, electrical, refrigeration, hydraulic, machinery and marine diesel engines.
• Ensure all non-routine tasks are carried out ensuring risk assessments, method statements and permit to works are completed and authorised prior to commencement.
• Order and Bunkering fuel for the vessel, ensure correct documentation Is completed and work is carried out as per the procedures of the Marine SMS.
• Ensure sufficient vitals (fuel, portable water, spare parts and sullage space) are onboard for that days operation. Notify in sufficient time, the Fleet Engineer when items are required for replenishment or removal.
• Perform diagnostics to determine if repairs or replacement of parts are required.
• Support the fleet engineer with preparing the vessels for dry docking and major special works; supervising any external engineering works and overseeing quality assurance.
• Ensure all engineering related daily and routine tasks are completed and recorded as required by the Marine Safety Management System. This will include, but is not limited to the completion of pre-sail checks, log book entries, defect reporting and planned maintenance records.
• Supervise any contractors working onboard.
• Always follow company procedures and policies.
• Ability to perform basic rope and deck work under the master direction.
•  Attending all training courses as required by the company. 

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

• MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC) 1 (Required).
• ENG1 or ML5 (Required).
• Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid. Higher grade certificates may be accepted. (Required).
• Sole engineer/Chief Engineer for more than 2 years (Required).
• Worked on Small Workboats
