Main duties of the job

Oxford University Hospitals Trust is developing its enhanced Emergency General Surgery Department based on Consultant Emergency General Surgeon, Specialty Doctor, Senior Clinical Fellows, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and daily Consultant Surgical Physician input. This is supported by appropriate access to emergency and urgent operating theatre lists, level and critical care support for perioperative care, and timely access to all diagnostic services.

This post is for one of eight Consultants providing leadership and service at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. This not only takes the form of a “hot” admitting week, but also a “cold” discharging week, an ambulatory clinic week and a week dedicated to operating in emergency theatres. There are then two elective weeks to follow-up any patients and carry out any elective operating required to complete the treatment of the patient. 

The work is supported by an on-call rota which includes other Consultant general surgery colleagues.

Working for our organisation

Emergency General Surgery is within the Directorate of Surgery . The Directorate includes Upper and Lower gastrointestinal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery , Endocrine Surgery, and Acute General Surgery.

Elective services are based at the Churchill and Horton Hospitals and Emergency services based at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Emergency General Surgery is supported with appropriate access to CEPOD theatre lists, ITU and HDU critical care support, perioperative care, a surgical ambulatory unit, and timely access to all diagnostic services, including endoscopy an interventional radiology.

The Unit sees between - patients per week with the surgical ambulatory care unit seeing up to patients per week.

As a guide, approximately - NELA laparotomies, - Trauma laparotomies and - acute laparoscopic cholecystectomies are performed within the unit acutely each year.

The Directorate of Surgery is within the Division of Surgery and Oncology which includes :

Renal, Transplant and Urology, Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Theatres. Oncology and Haematology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics
