Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Orthogeriatrics.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be a key part of the expanding orthogeriatric service at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Joining our two existing orthogeriatricians, this role will provide an excellent opportunity to develop pathways for elderly trauma orthopaedic patients and to provide holistic medical care for our fragility fracture patients aged over 60.

As an orthogeriatric consultant you will be working with a medical team and optimising patients prior to surgery. The orthogeriatric team operate a shared care model to fragility fracture patients including all orthopaedic trauma cases aged over 60 admitted under the care of the trauma and orthopaedic team. The role will also lead on falls and bone health reviews and discharge planning, including palliative care.

The role will also encompass working within the Major Trauma Service and supporting the development of elderly trauma pathways at the regional Major Trauma Centre (MTC) based at CUH. As a leading centre of excellence in trauma care we strive to make continuous innovative improvements in patient care, patient journeys and patient experience.

Main duties of the job

The orthogeriatricians are employed by the trauma and orthopaedic department and work closely with the anaesthetists and surgeons to ensure appropriate and timely surgery. Post-operatively we work closely with the multidisciplinary therapy teams, allied health professionals, nursing staff and discharge planning team. We are supported by colleagues in old age psychiatry, palliative care and the metabolic bone unit. Our patients are all followed up by our Fracture Liaison Service to ensure that lifestyle and falls risk factors are addressed and bone health assessments and treatments are commenced.

The role will also involve working with the Major Trauma Service team, in providing medical assessments, advice and holistic care to elderly patients across all specialities with the MTC.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in general medicine and geriatric medicine or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust.

About us

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.
