Job summary

Cambridgeshire Community Audiology Services are delighted to offer a part time, term time only, Fixed Term position for a School Hearing Screener until 29th August 2025; this has great potential for a secondment opportunity within Cambridgeshire Community Services.

The candidate will provide the provision of school hearing screening in the Bedfordshire area. The role involves testing hearing of children in mainstream schools, liaising with the schools and parents, carrying out all administrative duties related to hearing screening including accurate record keeping and making appropriate referrals.

Main duties of the job

To carry out hearing tests on school age children in Bedfordshire schools unsupervised.

To carry out all administrative duties related to hearing screening including accurate record keeping.

To manage school appointments, dealing with parents on the phone and face to face in schools.

Job responsibilities

Planning

To plan and deliver hearing screening clinics to children in reception classes in a timely and efficient manner within the Audiology guidelines.

To assist Audiologist and audiology service administrators in other non-clinical duties in a variety of community settings.

To organise own workload in conjunction with the Audiology Team Leader and depending on demands of the service.

Patient contact

To communicate with and obtain co-operation from children of all ages and abilities, in particular children in Reception.

To recognise non-compliance during screening tests and refer to guidelines as to what to do next.

Communication

To liaise with and provide information to all members of the Audiology team and other professionals as necessary in order to establish a co-ordinated service, education, other health care professionals and GPs

To gain informed consent and compliance by negotiation and encouragement.

To communicate effectively by transferring patient information and records in a timely and organised manner.

Liaise with parents/carers on a regular basis to discuss their childs results, any further testing and onward referral opportunities.

People Management

To help in the training of new Hearing School Screeners alongside the Audiology team.

Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process.

Research & Development Activity

To participate in audit of the screening service within the Trust and annually as part of the Audiology audit and other audiology related audit being undertaken by the department under the guidance of qualified staff.

Information Resources:

To use IT systems as part of daily work, including using SystmOne and spreadsheets.

Clinical and Practice Governance

Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported, or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.

The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.

The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures.

Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.

The post holder must participate in clinical and other audits as required.

Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis.

The post holder is required to participate in relevant emergency preparedness process for their team.

To be able to solve problems and deal with patient enquiries appropriately.

To recognise equipment failure and report to Audiology Team Leader.

General

The post holder is responsible for ensuring they receive the appropriate level of Safeguarding Children training according to their role

Sustainability

It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the Trusts environmental impact wherever possible. This will include recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use. Helping to reduce paper waste by minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel. Where the role includes the ordering and use of supplies or equipment the post holder will consider the environmental impact of purchases.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

Numerate and literate to GCSE level or equivalent including English GCSE and Maths GCSE

Desirable

Knowledge and training to work at NVQ/SVQ level 3 or equivalent

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Literate in IT Skills Good oral communication skills based on fluency in the English language Experience of working in a school setting with children key stage 1 or reception, and understanding their needs Experience of working with children in a health care setting.

EDCL In Computer Skills Experience of using SystmOne
