Job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust for an exceptional midwife with significant labour ward experience to join the Fetal Surveillance Team as Fetal Monitoring Midwife.

You will receive dedicated support, guidance, and mentorship from the Matron for Fetal Surveillance to enable you to develop your skills in applying a physiological approach to NICE guidance to ensure that at each encounter midwives and obstetricians are empowered to ask, 'How is the baby', not 'How is the CTG'?

You will have the opportunity and guidance to develop your skills in influencing, teaching, assessing, audit, quality improvement, and compassionate leadership.

The right person for this role will be an experienced individual who is dynamic, engaging, motivating and able to work in ways which promote inclusivity. You will work closely with the Matron for Fetal Surveillance and the Lead obstetrician for Fetal Monitoring, and the wider MDT. Main duties of the job

To work in collaboration with, and support the labour ward coordinator's, the senior midwives on the antenatal wards, community, day services, and MLU, and obstetricians, to ensure safe birth outcomes.

Be a proficient, approachable role model in addition to an expert clinician in the field of Midwifery.

To ensure effective communication has been established with parents, their families, and all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality care.

Ability to use developed interpersonal communication skills when appropriate. Use of empathy is essential.

Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information.

Provide and receive routine information requiring tact and persuasive skills, or with barriers to understanding give information to women about the service or planned intervention, offering appropriate support and reassurance.

To carry out any other reasonable duties as may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post to meet the needs of the service. This will include cover of appropriate duties during the absence of colleagues and at times of escalation.

To Lead on the implementation of the 'Savings Babies Lives V3, improving standards of fetal heart monitoring, interpretation, escalation, and appropriate management of care, reporting to the Matron for Intrapartum Care.

About us

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 12 months due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6800 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a changing Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

Eduaction and Qaulifications

Essential

Practising Midwife NMC registered To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998. Additional Fetal Monitoring Training - Baby Lifeline CTG Masterclass or willing to undertake. Attend Human Factors Training First degree, working towards a degree or equivalent relevant experience.

Desirable

Leadership Qualification Professional Midwifery Advocate Education at Master level

Significant Labour Ward experience Leadership and management skills Confident and experienced in challenging existing systems/protocols. Evidence of continuous professional development Evidence of learning and development in line with the NMC revalidation requirements. Credible, inspirational leader with experience of implementing change. Knowledge of Quality and Safety.

Desirable

Previous experience in leading/managing change in practice Experience in audit and service evaluation.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Sound knowledge of the professional agenda in relation to the fetal monitoring and fetal monitoring training. Understanding of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle version 3. Awareness of the requirements of CNST Safety Action 8 in relation to Fetal Monitoring training. Understand the requirements of the Care Competency Framework and able to describe the ambition to reach the stretch targets. Understand and articulate the role of the fetal monitoring lead in relation to understanding outcomes. Able to demonstrate evidence of multidisciplinary team working. Ability to work well under pressure and demonstrate resilience Competent in the use of IT and computer skills, word processing and report writing.
