Job Description

This role will be working in our fast paced state of the art, food testing microbiology laboratory in Wolverhampton. The pupose of this role is to be part of the team responsible for the timely and accurate production of media required within the microbiology laboratory taking responsibility for the quality of the media.

Please note this is a full time role working Monday to Friday 10:00 - 18:00, with an requirement to work 1 weekend in 3 (Saturday & Sunday). 

Ensure that external proficiency scheme samples are tested and reported accurately.  Ensure that Internal Quality Control is maintained and acceptable. Raise non-conforming work issues related to Quality and investigate using root cause analysis where assigned. Participate in and facilitate external laboratory audits, e.g. UKAS, RSA. Ensure that corrective actions assigned during internal and external auditing are completed. Escalation of issues affecting Quality performance to the Department management team/Local Quality Manager. Any other duties necessary to ensure the quality of results and service to the customers as designated by the Department Management Team Ensure all media quality control checks are performed accurately and in a timely manner in line with the standard operation procedures. Ensure that Cultures required for the Media Quality control are maintained. Report and investigate any media quality control failures without delay. Support the production team to ensure that sufficient media is produced and provided to the laboratory for the required workload and to this purpose, liaise closely with main and pathogen laboratory technicians and team leaders. To work on media quality control and production in a safe and appropriate manner, and in line with standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of self and colleagues.. To ensure the correct use of PPE at all times. To be familiar with COSHH guidelines and working practices within the media and pathogen laboratory To ensure that all equipment is kept within recommended limits for calibration and maintenance in order to adhere to quality targets. Ensure that all work is conducted in a clean and tidy manner with due attention to the careful maintenance of all laboratory fittings and equipment. Ensuring that any relevant paperwork related to the quality control of media, EQA and IQC is kept up to date. Assist with continuous improvement within the Microbiology department. 

Qualifications

GCSE maths, science, or equivilant. Excellent working knowledge of Food Microbiology / Chemistry laboratories accredited to ISO17025/RSA. Experience of working in a UKAS accredited laboratory. To be familiar with COSHH guidelines and working practices within the media and pathogen laboratory. Good IT skills, Word, Excel & LIMS. Excellent analytical skills. Good auditing skills. ‘Can do’ attitude and be able to deliver change through people management skills.
