Purpose of the Role:

To support the Engineering and Operational aspects of the Test of Previous Car programme objectives. Through the running of a TPC F1 car, support the preparation and development of McLaren Racing’s drivers, and client drivers. Provide development opportunities to operational and engineering personnel within McLaren Racing. Match the existing best working practices of the wider Racing organisation, at track and factory. Working as part of TPC’s Engineering team and supporting the Lead Engineer in coordinating, preparing and where appropriate executing engineering and operational tasks around test events (pre, during and post), and developing longer term improvements to processes or analysis. Working across a diverse range of functions – physical car focussed (car build, reliability, design liaison), track engineering, control systems, team organisation and process development.

Principal Accountabilities:

Operational Engineering

Working with the permanent and event specific TPC team at both factory and track events to support them in their roles. Supporting the definition and maintenance of car specification for each TPC event. Supporting the preparation for near and future aspects of car builds, working with Project Managers and Logistics to manage allocations. Reliability and fault tracking, management, and resolution, especially between events. Tracking current best practice, development direction and knowledge from the wider F1 team. Liaison with the wider MRL F1 team to achieve the above: o Operations: Programme Management, Purchasing, Quality, Car Build & Assembly, etc. Technical: Design Office, Operational/Reliability Engineering, Car Systems and Electrical, etc.

Trackside Engineering

Supporting the Lead Engineer in ensuring that each TPC event has thorough technical/engineering support and planning. Collaboration in technical and personnel aspects with the core Engineering competencies required to run a Formula 1 car: Race & Performance Engineering Vehicle Performance, Simulator Control Systems, Electrical and IT systems, data acquisition, communicationsAero Performance / Aerodynamics Software & Simulation Power Unit Technical Partner Expectation of operationally collaborating with the above competencies, with a view to developing skills in these areas over time. Where required, support the Driver Development Programme during preparation of drivers ahead of joining TPC events.

Job requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

This is a broad role with the potential to be tailored to an individual’s interests and skills, provided the candidate’s approach is underpinned by an interest in building a broad understanding of both the car itself, and the environment it runs in. Experience within at least one F1 Engineering function (e.g. Design, Reliability, Vehicle Performance, Aerodynamics, Control Systems etc). A proven interest in building knowledge beyond a core department, towards a broader understanding of how an F1 team operates an F1 car. Ideally, exposure to some combination of trackside F1 trackside engineering or operations, and car engineering and development. Ability to evaluate and develop processes to ensure more efficient, controlled, or reliable running. Engineering level literacy with computers (Excel etc). Experience of programming (MATLAB, Python), use of simulation tools and the Dassault 3DX CAD system is ideal. Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
