Job summary

This is a band 4 post which requires a Dental Nurse with enthusiasm to be able to work in a busy multidisciplinary team in the Oral, Maxillofacial, Orthodontic department . The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be reliable, highly motivated and be able to use their own initiative, working well and integrating within an established team. This person will need to have a supportive, caring attitude and be committed to providing the highest level of patient care.

Main duties of the job

Working in Oral & Maxillofacial clinics and also Orthodontic clinics in both specialties requires a high standard of chairside nursing , excellent communication skills both in clinic and office settings. IT skill- computer literate. Well motivated, ability to prioritise appropriately and work with minimal supervision. Cross infection, literacy skills, organisational skills, time management, ability to run their own clinic.

GDC requirements along with the need to complete Statutory and Mandatory training with in the trust and have a willingness to learn and develop new skills via courses relevant to the post.

Dental Nurse

Band: 4

Location: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/Orthodontics, County Hospital, UHNM

Hours of Duty: Flexible may include evenings and weekends.

Managerially accountable to: Directorate Manager/Matron/ Clinic Manager

Professionally accountable to: Professional Head of Nursing & Specialised Surgery Matron

Role Summary

The Dental nurse will aim to provide a welcoming, friendly and reassuring environment for patients, their families, escorts and colleagues. Recognising and adhering to the Trusts values in their role within the team. Support the clinic managers with the management of the department reporting any departmental issues to the Clinic Manager or Senior Dental Nurse. Participate in the development and maintenance of high standards of pre and post-operative care. Be responsible for the assessment of patient needs, delivering approved programmes of care across the multidisciplinary clinics. Supporting education across the patient care pathway. Keep accurate records of patient care including observation charts, care plans, accident report forms and render statistical information as required. Ensure that the clinics are prepared and organised in advance of clinic to enable results etc. to be gathered and checked for further action prior to clinic .

Patient data Reports of untoward incidents (Datix) Supply such statistical information as is requested by senior managers.

Key Areas/Tasks

How does the role influence policy change within their area of work and how does this impact on other areas within the organisation or wider health economy? Does the post holder need to organise other peoples time, for example compiling rotas or managing diaries? Does this planning involve outside agencies or other organisations? Does the post require project or event management skills? If so describe the sort of projects or events, the length of time the planning will take and whether the plans are likely to need to be flexible and change at short notice. Is the post holder responsible for making strategic decisions which will directly impact on the care of patients/clients of the Trust? What is the level of autonomy of the role? Is the post holder managed on a day to day basis? How frequently would they need to refer to their manager or supervisor for guidance and instruction and what situations would they need to request direction? What is the level of contact with patients / clients? Does the post holder provide direct care, are they responsible for agreeing pathways or treatment plans which directly affect a patient/client. Does the post holder have any financial responsibility responsibility for stock or cash or patient valuables, is this post holder a budget holder (If so how much for)? Does the post holder need to undertake formal research as part of their role. If so, describe the research and the level. Does the post holder have any responsibility for IT systems and packages? How is the post holder required to produce and store information; is any data they collate or produce used by other members of the Trust. do they take formal minutes of meetings, do they manage databases of information on staff or patients? Try to describe the level of concentration that the person would have to apply in the job. Give examples of how often and for how long this occurs. Describe the extent to which they could be interrupted or have to change from one task to another. Who does the post holder communicate with and what sort of communication takes place? What is the most complicated or sensitive information that they have to communicate? In what situations will the post holder need to influence or persuade others? Is the person going to be responsible for any of the following - Day to day supervision, staff allocation, work allocation, discipline, grievance, appraisals, professional/clinical supervision, allocation or supervision of students, core specialist training provision? The organisational chart you provide in the Job Description will also help you consider this information. Are any parts of the post holders responsibilities which are likely to be emotionally difficult or distressing, if so how frequently is this likely to occur.
