This is an opportunity for a passionate and ambitious gardener to lead on developing Mottistone Gardens and the whole horticultural operation, as we begin a new chapter in its history as a 20th century flower garden and look to gardening alongside 21st century climate change. This isn’t a blank canvas by any means, but you’ll have the opportunity and licence to create your own masterpiece in Mottistone’s history.

This role is required to work with vulnerable groups including children and any offer of employment or volunteering is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

What it's like to work here

Mottistone Gardens sits in the heart of an area steeped in human history spanning 6000 years, the Manor has stood for more than 500 years, and today there is a six-acre well-established 20th century flower garden welcoming 50,000 visitors a year.

Reporting to the Visitor Operations and Experience Manager, you'll be responsible for the whole garden operation, leading a small but rapidly growing team, whilst working in collaboration with Visitor Experience, Visitor Welcome and Facilities teams to create the best experience of the property.

What you'll be doing

You'll be leading the management and development of the garden, and working outdoors in all weather conditions, keeping our lawns, beds and borders, hedges, pathways, and woods maintained to a high standard and ensuring our trees are well cared for. You’ll make sure we’re compliant against health and safety legislation and best practice standards in all garden operations. Leading by example, you’ll demonstrate exceptional gardening skills, which others can follow and learn from. You’ll understand how to manage the team daily workload, and you’ll give inspiring and practical training to new staff and volunteers. Whilst building positive working relationships across the entire site, you’ll engage with visitors to the garden, sharing its story, answering their questions, and ensuring they have an excellent experience. Who we're looking for

Practical experience in horticulture, supported by appropriate qualifications to RHS level 3 or equivalent level of vocational experience  Experience of co-ordinating garden activities to improve garden visits for visitors Leadership skills including volunteer management, with an understanding of the different approach needed to reward, recognise and empower volunteers Able to communicate at various levels Experience in handling small contracts with a knowledge of how to assess and manage risk effectively Knowledge of all Health & Safety and Compliance requirements relevant to horticulture operations
