An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Legal Services team at Sheffield City Council as a Senior Governance and Regulatory Lawyer. The team operates in a fast-paced environment, dealing with a diverse and demanding range of legal practice areas. These areas include Governance, Education, Housing, Licensing and general Criminal prosecutions. 

Applications are welcome from individuals who are enthusiastic, flexible and enjoy teamwork. We seek candidates who are motivated to apply their expertise and practical experience in delivering solution-focussed legal advice to the Council on governance-related matters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing authoritative advice to the Council’s Officers and Members, ensuring that decisions and actions are lawful. They will manage their own caseload, which will include complex and interesting areas of law. This includes providing advice on Committee and Council reports and other constitutional issues. Additionally, the successful candidate will have day to day management of a team of dedicated lawyers and legal assistants, making a positive contribution to our communities.

Whilst experience in the public sector would be beneficial, it is not essential if the candidate can demonstrate relevant expertise in local government law and practice.

This role is based in Sheffield, but we actively support flexible working arrangements, and the City is centrally located with excellent transport links, and we consider the wellbeing of our employees in the way we design and deliver our legal services. You can expect the ability to work flexibly, including hybrid working, to be a feature of working for Sheffield City Council.

This is a politically restricted post according to the terms of Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
