Job summary

The post holder will be a qualified sonographer who will be expected to work autonomously within the specialist field of early pregnancy and obstetric advanced practitioner is responsible for their clinical work and professional development. The practitioner will provide leadership and training within the department and will support service development, audit and post holder will undertake reflective evaluation of practice, support clinical governance and work as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the ultrasound department based in the Women's Unit at Oxford University Hospital's NHS Trust for a qualified sonographer or midwife sonographer. The successful candidate will have a broad experience of current obstetric ultrasound techniques including nuchal translucency, transvaginal scanning and Doppler assessment.

The John Radcliffe Hospital is a tertiary referral maternity unit and post holders will experience a varied case load of high and low risk pregnancies. In addition, the department has a close working relationship with the Fetal Medicine Unit, the lead centre for the Regional Fetal Medicine Network.

You will be supported by a multidisciplinary group of committed Sonographers, Support Workers, Obstetricians, Nurses and Midwives who provide an excellent service for pregnant women. The expectation is that the individual team members are actively involved in teaching, research, audit and multidisciplinary meetings. The individual must have a strong commitment to practice, safety and the provision of a responsive, dynamic ultrasound service.

The postholder will be expected to partake in Saturday working within their hours.

Job responsibilities

This role requires the post holder to have advanced clinical judgement to enable independent effective decision-making.

To undertake, interpret and take responsibility for ultrasound examinations performed.

To formulate, issue and be accountable for accurate clinical reports ensuring the findings are reported and acted upon.

Proactively support and participate with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure an effective, efficient delivery of service in order to maintain departmental standards.

To plan, assess, deliver and evaluate personal workload in liaison with line manager and clinical lead. It is essential that the post holder is able to communicate information effectively; this may be to a patient, a patients relative, colleague or referring physician.

The post holder must be empathic at all times and be able to deliver bad news sensitively.

To maintain and promote a high standard of clinical practice and patient care at all times.

Qualifications

Essential

Certificate/Diploma (as appropriate) in Medical Ultrasound (CMU/DMU) or Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound ( with qualifications relevant to obstetric scanning or Bsc in medical ultrasound DQASS accredited

Desirable

Completion FASP/E-lfh training resource Screening Down's, Edwards & Patau's Syndrome, NT (Essential) Cardiac and Anomaly scanning (Desirable)

Experience

Essential

Competent in transvaginal scanning Competent in all aspects of obstetric scanning Competent in umbilical artery Doppler scanning.
