CGP seeks top graduates...

At CGP, we only ever take on exceptional people — after all, our best-selling books require great brains to make them. We’re now looking for graduates with STEM backgrounds (Maths, Chemistry or Physics would be ideal) to join our 70-strong editing team based in the wonderful Lake District.

You’ll write and edit brilliant content for pupils of all ages, from primary school to A-level, and all in our distinctive house style. As long as you have a 2:1 degree, at least AAB at A-level and a bit of work or volunteering experience under your belt, we’d love to hear from you.

Why join CGP?

We’re the UK’s No.1 educational publisher There’s tonnes of opportunity to progress, right across the business We tend to do things a bit differently — who else has their very own Quirk Ambassador? Flexible working’s an option once you’re fully trained up And right on the doorstep of our favourite National Park

Sound interesting? Have a watch of our and make up your own mind.

What would I be doing?

You’ll be editing and writing text, making sure explanations are clear and easy to understand. You’ll also be finding and editing graphics, and combining them with the text to produce beautifully laid out pages. As a Trainee in the team, you’ll receive detailed feedback, guidance and training from more senior Editors to help you progress.

And the humour, who adds that?

You will You’ll learn CGP’s instantly recognisable house style so that you’re fully equipped to make sure our books are bursting with personality.

What qualifications and skills will I need?

You’ll have a great academic record — at least a 2:1 degree and AAB at A-Level (plus top grades in GCSE English and Maths).

You’ll need to be really good with words (and grammar) and have excellent attention to detail so that you can produce great pages, make quick decisions, and spot mistakes. As well as top communication skills and the ability to take constructive feedback on board, a flash of creativity is very handy too.

What subjects will I be working on?

It depends on what products we’re making. There’ll be times when you work on your subject specialism and times when you’re working on something completely different — and this might be at any level from Reception to A Level. It’s important that you’re flexible, a good team player and willing to turn your hand to something new.

But I’m not an English graduate — don’t you need that degree to work in publishing?

Nope, not at all — but you will need a solid grasp of grammar, spelling and punctuation. We’re more interested in your ability to explain complex ideas in everyday language than any experience in creative writing or analysing texts.

What software do I need to be able to use?

We use a range of different software to make our products, with Adobe InDesign being the main one — but we’ll teach you all you need to know. You’ll need to be comfortable getting to grips with new software quickly, but you don’t need prior experience of any particular packages. After that, we expect you to be constantly improving your software skills to become ever slicker at your job.

Where will I be working?

You’ll be based at one of our offices on the southern edge of the beautiful Lake District in Cumbria. It’s rural, so you’ll find it easier if you’re a driver. Once you’ve been with us a while, there could be the option for some hybrid working.

What if I’m not into the outdoors?

Although it certainly helps to like the outdoors when you live in the Lake District, there are plenty of local groups and activities that don’t require hiking boots Our employees enjoy taking part in local pub quizzes, book clubs, amateur dramatic groups, live gigs, local festivals and even trying out the odd aerial silk fitness class.

I’ve never considered working in publishing before, and I don’t have any experience — is that a problem?

Definitely not. In fact, plenty of our Editors weren't looking for a job in publishing before they came across our advert. They’re a bright, talented bunch who wanted to continue to use their subject knowledge but weren’t keen on a career in the lab, finance or the classroom. Joining our publishing team was the right decision for them… so it could be for you too
