Fracture clinic are excited to announce a vacancy for a Trainee Orthopaedic Casting Practitioner. Are you self- motivated and looking to work in a fast paced clinic where no day is ever the same. You will be joining a friendly and supportive team, who work closely with a variety of different disciplines within Trauma and Orthopaedics.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Orthopaedic Casting Practitioner with effective communication skills to join our friendly team. In return we offer on-going learning opportunities to support your professional development. The successful candidate following a 12 month training period in our plaster rooms, will attend the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course, to be become an Orthopaedic Casting Practitioner.
Main duties of the job
Our Fracture Clinic is part of the speciality of Trauma and Orthopaedics, we are forward facing providing outpatient care to Trauma and Orthopaedic patients. Care is provided to a very diverse range of patients including trauma, major trauma, elective orthopaedics and plastic surgery patients. We work closely with A&E, Theatres, inpatient wards, paediatrics and primary care. The clinic works closely with the trauma nurse practitioners.

The post holder will be required to meet the care needs of orthopaedic patients attending Fracture clinic from a Casting Practitioner perspective.
To provide high quality patient focused service for orthopaedic patients, both within the clinic and throughout the hospital as required. To ensure that in your role you are updated with current practices with casting, plastering and orthotics and is able to actively use research as appropriate.
To support other services as required, including wards A and E and paediatric patients.
Able to deliver a casting training program for the multidisciplinary team with orthopaedics, including students and registered professionals with the trust.
Fracture clinic patients often attend with plaster problems. Your role will be to review these problems and change the cast when required
Person Specification
Commitment to Trust Values and Behaviours

British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course, including evidence of recertification every 3 years. This will include the application, adjustments and removal of all types of casts, using a wide range of materials IT and numerically literate. Meets mandatory and essential role requirements. Expectation to complete the trusts introductory mandatory training within 3 months of commencing the role Be able to provide comprehensive patient education regarding care of cast, monitoring or neurovascular observations and potential cast associated problems and complications pressure sores Keep up to date with current clinic issues whilst demonstrating awareness of how these impact on own practice and practice within the department

12 Months experience working in plaster room or working in an orthopaedic/Trauma setting Experience and knowledge of wound care management to include traumatic and post-operative wounds Willing to train members of staff, including new staff, students and staff within the department. To deliver training outside the department as required to medics, ward staff and A and E Able to recognise complications related to plasters and injuries/operations compartment syndrome Contribute to the implementation of policies and procedure within the sphere of responsibility

Experience plastering paediatric patients To apply plaster casts while medical staff are manipulating fractures Understanding of common orthopaedic conditions and injuries

Able to work under own initiative and without direct supervision within responsibilities of the role. Able to manage and prioritise own workload whilst recognising the wider needs of the team. Flexible to the needs of the clinic. To attend wards and meet the needs of patients who are unable to attend clinic for treatment. Involvement in the procurement and maintenance of casting equipment cast saws. Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Essential
Flexibility to work shift patterns to meet the needs of the clinic over 7 days between 8am to 8pm including bank holidays. Manual dexterity. Physically able to perform the full range of duties removal of plasters using a plaster saw/shears and application of casts to adults.
