The Assistant Service Accountant role is responsible for the production of monthly management accounts and for providing sound financial advice and support to Operational Managers, both clinical and non-clinical, at Ward/Department and Directorate level.

This is a key role in supporting and working with financial and operational colleagues in delivering excellent patient services in the Manchester Care Group Division.

Main duties of the job

To provide financial and management accountancy services to Manchester Care Group, ensuring that clients receive relevant, accurate and timely financial advice. Maintain systems and processes to ensure that the Trust can achieve the strategy on a stable financial platform. You will also assist with training, projects and financial procedures as required.

The key elements of the role are to:

Provide operational managers with information and analysis each month. Review actual income and expenditure within the Trust ledger system. Prepare and input journals and accruals to produce accurate management accounts. Hold meetings with budget holders and managers independently. Support the Directorate Teams to ensure timely reporting and recovery of income. Prepare budget virements and journals to maintain the integrity of financial and staffing budgets. Deputise for the Service Accountant & Finance Business Partner, wherever appropriate

Job description

Job responsibilities

To work with the Service Accountant, Finance Business Partner and budget holders to support the setting of budgets within the Trust for your services. To assist in the production of monthly budget statements, assuring their accuracy and completeness.

Calculate and post Income and expenditure accruals and prepayments.

Maintain detailed staffing lists for all areas of responsibility.

To assist in the production of monthly variance reports to enable scrutiny of the reported financial position for your area.

Establish new posts and budgets as required for new services, ensuring Establishment control, setting up position numbers, organisations, ensuring funding is available for posts in Trac.

Maintain systems for forecasting, monitoring, and requesting relevant information to complete returns.

To work with the Management Accountant and budget holders to calculate revenue budgets, considering the policies set by the Executive Directors of the Trust and in accordance with the agreed timetable.

To raise invoice and credit requests.

Attend finance clinics with Ward/Operational managers to identify support with service changes.

Deputise wherever, necessary for Service Accountant, Divisional Accountant & Finance Business Partner

Production and analysis of monthly budget statements with support in order to assess the level of accuracy and completeness and to make any necessary adjustments in accordance with the timetable for reporting to the Board and budget holders.

Control short-term workload, managing client expectations to ensure consistent and satisfactory service levels.

To ensure that you demonstrate a commitment to equality of opportunity for both service users and Trust staff.

Authorisation of establishment and control documents.

Input information from source documents into the computer system.

Locate and retrieve recorded details of requested items from the computer system.

Generate and print standard reports on the computer system.

Obtain non routine information from the computerised Management Information System.

Produce spreadsheets for the analysis of numerical information.

Support with the development of reporting mechanisms to demonstrate the impact of internal or external developments on the financial performance of the Trust, its clinical services and supporting functions.

Produce accurate monthly budgetary information.

Prepare forecasts of income and expenditure.

Support in the production of year end income and expenditure forecasts for your services.

Review and report financial position of services to Management Accountant/Senior Finance Manager.

To have detailed knowledge of the Trusts Standing Financial Instructions and Financial Procedures, ensuring that clients understand and adhere to them: including the development and presentation of appropriate training courses.

Produce statutory returns as and when required.

Contribute to the final accounts process.

Support in carrying out investment appraisal of new capital and revenue projects for the Trust as required, including assessment of lease/purchase of assets.

Provide advice and guidance on the financial impact of proposals for redesign and modernisation.

Provide costings to support service developments or redesign.

Contribute to improving the effectiveness of accounting systems.

Make recommendations to reduce costs and enhance value.

Undertake other duties as agreed with the Service Accountant.

To undertake any other reasonable duty, when requested to do so by an appropriate Trust manager.

To understand and comply with all Trust policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

To understand the Trusts Strategic Goals and how you can support them.
