Senior UI/UX QA Engineer

Description

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior UI/UX QA engineer to join the KX R&D team, working on the world’s leading time series database ecosystem.

You’ll be a senior contributor in the QA team primarily focused on our new cloud native KX Insights Platform microservices-based product, in addition to our existing world leading hosted and on-prem products in Capital Markets, Industrial Automation, Utilities, IoT, Telco and Risk Management.

KX products are built on top of the kdb+ database, which is the world’s fastest time series database, written in the q programming language. The KX Insights Platform is our new microservices cloud native product, with plans to make it a SaaS offering. Ease of deployment (Kubernetes, Helm charts), ease of use (UI led, no-q / low-q Python and SQL interfaces), and ease of interoperability (Java SDK, C SDK) are key features of KX Insights. We work with all the major cloud providers.

The agile development teams have excellent quality focus, developing automated CI test cases as they go. The QA System Test team complements this by developing and executing test frameworks to System Test the KX Insights Platform at scale. Some QA team members are also embedded in dev scrum teams.

This role is for a senior UI/UX QA engineer embedded in the UI or Cloud dev teams. As the product is UI led, the quality of the UI UX is paramount. The current UI implementation unnecessarily exposes the underlying microservices architecture to the user rather than being use case led, where the interface is intuitively obvious, and the underlying implementation remains hidden from the user. Your mission is to work in the UI and/or Cloud teams to improve their UI UX in any way you can collaboration with our new UX lead.

The UI team currently use Cypress for test automation. We are likely to use Python for Cloud scrum team test automation.

Our R&D teams are based in Dublin, Belfast, Newry, Budapest, London, New York, Ontario, and Ottawa as well as individual contributors in other locations. The UI team is primarily based in Dublin. The Cloud team is primarily based in Budapest. You’ll be reporting directly to the VP of QA, who is based in Dublin.

Role

• You will be a senior QA engineer tasked with improving the quality of our UI/UX in any way you can.

• You need to be able to understand complex distributed systems quickly and thoroughly to enable you to debug complex issues.

• You need to be customer focused.

• You need to have a good feel for what makes a good UI/UX (and what doesn’t).

• You need to be good at finding important bugs.

• You need to be collaborative, working with the scrum teams and product managers to determine priorities and requirements.

• Your focus will be to drive quality improvements in the product, primarily through testing and test automation. Process improvement is fair game too. The UI team currently use Cypress for their CI test automation, including automated unit and end-to-end testing. In this role, manual testing of the UI/UX will also be important.

• Work with the various R&D teams and Product Managers to:

o Gain an understanding of products and components, and specifically any gaps in testing.

o Be aware of upcoming features and releases, and plan testing efforts accordingly.

o Review requirements for new features to help identify edge conditions and gaps.

o Provide “shift left” feedback from QA to dev on any areas of concern.

 For example, a particular microservice that needs improved resiliency.

 Ensure critical issues reported by QA are addressed in a timely manner.

o Determine how best to automate regression tests for existing products to improve release agility.

• Execute manual and automated test, analyze failures, and file good quality JIRA bug reports to facilitate efficient bug fixing.

o Maintain quality metrics.

o Report on release candidate quality, flagging potential release blockers or other concerns.

• Keep abreast of emerging QA tools and best practice.

• Work with Customer Success (Support) and Product Managers to understand what issues customers are reporting and plug any gaps in our test coverage.

o This is “shift left” feedback from Support (customers) to QA.

o A KPI for the QA team is the ratio of bugs caught prior to release versus bugs missed by QA and found by customers.

 We want to make that ratio as high as possible through continuous improvement.

o Work with Customer Success project teams to identify areas of concern.

 For example, ease of use, ease of integration with customer apps.

Qualifications

• Computer science degree or equivalent.

• + years’ experience in UI/UX software testing.

• Experience designing and implementing automated test frameworks for complex systems, preferably with excellent knowledge of Cypress.

• Experience being a QA technical lead, developing and executing test strategies and test plans, able to work independently and collaborate with colleagues.

• Experience debugging complex issues in distributed systems.

• Experience reporting out quality metrics and issues of concern to stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of q/kdb+, qcumber.

• Python.

• Experience with cloud platforms and SaaS.

• Experience with Kubernetes, Helm Charts, Raft.

• Experience with agile and scrum best practices.

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, GitLab, Jenkins.

• Experience with microservices architecture.
