The Person

The Grace College library is centrally located within the school, which reflects the role it will have in the school community. The library is a brand new area within the school. The space will be a central hub for reading interventions, the promotion of reading competitions and challenges, the site for author talks and homework club. the library will be a dynamic and exciting place to lead, and will be transformational in the opportunities and experiences provided to the students of Grace College.

As librarian you would have an enthusiasm about books and children’s literature, be proactive in ensuring the library runs events and competitions in line with national and international key events. You would have the scope to develop the library layout even further, having a key role in the administration and development of our weakest readers, ensuring everyone can enjoy a life filled with books. As librarian, you will take a lead in developing the weakest readers within the school, their development in reading is crucial to their ability to achieve.

You will be responsible for leading, supporting and engaging in the reading intervention programme, working with targeted groups of students to extend both a breadth and depth of vocabulary, alongside supporting significant improvements in their reading ages.

There is no requirement that individual teachers should be Christians, but it is essential however that all staff understand and enthusiastically support our mission, ethos and values. There is a remarkable unity of purpose within the current staff team as individuals unite around our core beliefs that people are infinitely precious, gifted for a purpose and morally responsible. A desire to work with the most deprived in our communities and those with low academic starting points, as well as with the most able and those from more privileged backgrounds, is an essential prerequisite.

The Role

Encouraging a love of reading and learning with a particular emphasis on:

• supporting the development and deployment of the whole school reading strategy, inclusive of the library redevelopment, looking to create a space for all students to engage with reading and other academic provisions;

• creating a library programme that is engaging and ambitious, aspiring to promote and sustain a love of reading for students from all backgrounds. Using displays, events and competitions to mark key international dates and events;

• implementing the ‘Routes into Reading’ programme alongside the reading intervention programme, including ensuring the effective implementation and administration of Literacy Assessment Online to ensure that all students’ are regularly tested for their reading ages and this information is shared with staff.

The library with a particular emphasis on:

• the day-to-day running of the library, engaging students from all year groups and backgrounds in the library, and engaging student librarians and parents in the library space;

• engaging the Sixth Form in a reading mentoring programme to support the development of lower ability readers;

• supporting the academic development of the library, ensuring that the space is used to support Post 16 in the development of essential skills in preparation for university. Having a wider College and community impact with a particular emphasis on:

• developing a programme for the library which looks to engage our parent community in the love of reading. Organising events with authors and providing parents with book lists to support a love of reading in the home.

Creating library newsletters, taking responsibility for sharing library events and achievements via social media;

• ensuring the library is stocked with new books which may have an impact in the development of our students culturally, developing their curiosity, interest, and love of reading. Resourcing the library through a range of different avenues, via book competitions and UK wide strategies, using the library as a platform to engage students in the wider world of books;

• leading on the continuous development of the library as a central part of the school offering. Creating a hub of excitement and love for reading. Having a love and passion for books, sharing this with staff and students to further promote curiosity and interest in reading
