This specialty doctor post has been created to support the development of the psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) service for adolescents. The post holder will work alongside the appointed full-time consultant and a highly motivated and integrated multi-disciplinary team. Meadow Unit has an innovative clinical model based on Positive Behavioral Support and is part of the National CAMHS PICU Network.

You will have clinical leadership opportunities to develop your skills and medical education/supervision. You will also be part of a Trust wide Specialty Doctor Network. The Trust is committed to high quality teaching and training for medical students, post graduate trainees in psychiatry, specialty doctors, students and other professionals and we work closely with the Psychiatric Department of the University of Oxford.

Main duties of the job

Meadow Unit forms part of the integrated inpatient service for adolescents. The Trust provides Tier 4 inpatient and other services for Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties commissioned by NHS England. Oxford Health is the lead provider for the Thames Valley Clinical Network New Care Model for Tier 4 provision, with Oxford Health 8 beds at this PICU. The other inpatient services include the Highfield Unit (General Adolescent Unit - GAU), Oxford and Marlborough House (General Adolescent Unit - GAU), Swindon.

The post holder will work with an experienced multidisciplinary team, which includes nursing staff, psychologist, social worker, family therapist and occupational therapist. There is provision for schooling where the local authority teachers follow the national curriculum. It is expected that the PICU will attract a number of students, including medical students and students from other disciplines.

This post would be based within a well-resourced multidisciplinary team with experienced Consultant. As part of the medical team, you will be responsible for supporting your team in ensuring that our service users' needs are met through the delivery of high-quality care, offering a person-centred approach to their independence and well-being.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Under the supervision and direction of the consultant, the post holder will be responsible for: Day-to-day management of the inpatients at the PICU, Meadow Unit, Warneford Hospital. This will include contribution to ward rounds (including typing contemporaneous clinical notes into the electronic patient records), CPA review and discharge planning meetings, and Mental Health Act Tribunals. This will be under the clinical supervision of the dedicated inpatient consultants from the team. Liaison with the Community Mental Health teams (CAMHS) to ensure coordinated clinical care of patients. Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and discharge summaries using Trust IT and clinical records system training will be provided where needed. Work collaboratively with other agencies, in particular liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the unit. The teams most commonly involved with this will be the GAUs Team, Hospital at Home and Day-Patient Teams, CAMHS Crisis and OSCA, Early Intervention Psychosis (EIS) and Local Authority/Social Services Teams Active commitment to delivering the Trusts clinical governance agenda. Meadow Unit will lead its own governance agenda including audit, quality, patient experience, learning from incidents, patient safety initiatives and interrogation of data. The senior leadership team comprising of matron, consultants and ward manager will link with CAMHS management both in identifying areas of concern and feeding back actions, as well as area of excellence. Contribution to developing and delivering improved clinical services as outlined in the National Service Framework for Mental Health and in the CAMHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit Service Specifications The post holder will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit with appropriate administrative support. The post holder will normally cross-cover with the other trainees for annual leave, study leave and brief periods of sickness absence.
