Job summary

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trustis seeking to recruit a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Successfulcandidates will join a team of 20 Consultants who provide elective and traumainpatient and outpatient services. The post willhave a special interest in foot and ankle surgery. The Directorate providesservices across 3 hospital sites within the county of Worcestershire. Thecandidate will benefit from working within a friendly and experienced team.

As a Trust we areactively involved in developing the training program for students from theThree Counties Medical School based in Worcester which opens in September 2023.We look forward to establishing links with the new Medical School in additionto well-established relationships with the University of Birmingham and the Universityof Warwick.

Main duties of the job

The Foot & Ankle service is dynamic and ambitious, and the new candidate will be expected to engage in and contribute to its improvement and expansion. We currently undertake all major foot and ankle surgery and joint replacements. We work constructively with the community musculoskeletal physiotherapy and podiatry services to filter referrals. We currently have a Specialist Foot & Ankle Practitioner and are looking to expand this area with more specialist practitioners to work alongside consultants in clinics and theatres. In conjunction with the community podiatrists, we offer a Rapid Access Diabetic Foot service and carry out reconstructive surgery for the diabetic foot and the new incumbent will be expected to participate in this.

Job responsibilities

The new consultant will be joining the current team of 3 Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeons who provide a comprehensive Trauma, Elective and Diabetic Foot & Ankle service to the county of Worcestershire.

We have regular placements of Higher Surgical Trainees for experience in Foot & Ankle surgery and are renowned for providing a high-quality training experience. The new incumbent will be expected to take on educational duties within the team.

We are currently working on the following plans:

Centralisation of all day and short stay elective Foot & Ankle surgery Protocols and pathways for Foot & Ankle trauma Liaison with community Podiatrists and Therapists to improve referral pathways Improved diagnostic / imaging facilities for Foot & Ankle Establishing a robust Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot team for acute care Increasing / Training Specialist Practitioners Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise. Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent

Desirable

Higher degree. Entry on Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedics (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date).

Personal Attributes

Essential

Ability to work in a team. Enquiring, critical approach to work. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies. Commitment to Continuing Medical Education.

Desirable

Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local regional or national levels.

Experience

Essential

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients. Expertise in subspecialty. Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service. Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities. Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit. Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines. Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems. An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives.

Desirable

Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate. Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making. Ability to supervise postgraduate research. Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years. Evidence of having undertaken original research.

Other requirements

Essential

An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues. Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when on call.
