Curator of Maps and Mobilities

London, United Kingdom Royal Museums Greenwich Full time

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy puts people at the core of its success.

Working in the Curatorial and Research team and reporting to the Senior Curator: Royal Observatory, the Curator of Maps and Mobilities will support the delivery of Royal Museum Greenwich's mission by providing specialist knowledge and advocacy in relation to our world-class collection of maps, charts and globes and how these objects reflect the mobility of people, ideas and goods via maritime routes. They will work with colleagues and collaborators to create unique and inspiring opportunities for diverse publics to engage with our themes and collections, as well as to build knowledge and understanding, and to share new learning and research.

Key organisational responsibilities in this role include providing advocacy and specialist knowledge for their designated collection and subject area, and to inform the development and delivery of Royal Museums Greenwich strategy, plans and programmes. Providing effective line management and managing relationships with key stakeholders will also be an essential element to this role. Key research and collections responsibilities include providing specialist knowledge to Royal Museums Greenwich in relation to maps, charts, globes and objects related to mobility; seeking out opportunities to promote public engagement with Royal Museums Greenwich's collections; and building relationships with relevant networks and groups which can help realise organisational ambitions. The candidate will be an effective and inspiring communicator of specialist knowledge through various formats, such as answering enquiries, writing text, giving talks and tours, and responding to media opportunities.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of engaging non-specialist audiences with complex ideas and issues, gained in a museum, gallery or historic house environment, or similar. They will have detailed knowledge of histories and contexts relating to the role’s specific subjects, sites and collections of focus, gained through academic training or other means. They will have excellent research, writing, organisation and presentation skills, as well as experience of effective collaborative working in a diverse team, supporting colleagues and engaging with stakeholders. The candidate will have a keen sense of initiative and an ability to identify opportunities as they arise, and an understanding of how issues of diversity and equality pertain to Royal Museums Greenwich’s work, with demonstrable evidence of an active commitment to these.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 5 – Middle Management and Professional Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days between the hours of 9am-5pm, although due to the nature of the work, some flexibility may be required.

We offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, pension, 22 days annual leave (rising to 25 after 1 year), training and development opportunities, an environment with flexible working options, free or discounted admissions and more.
