Glasgow, United Kingdom BDO UK Full time

Ideas | People | Trust

We’re BDO. An accountancy and business advisory firm, providing the advice and solutions entrepreneurial organisations need to navigate today’s changing world.

We work with the companies that are Britain’s economic engine – ambitious, entrepreneurially-spirited and high‑growth businesses that fuel the economy – and directly advise the owners and management teams leading them.

We’ll broaden your horizons

In FY23 income from Private Equity houses and PE-backed businesses reached £181m (25% higher than prior year). The firm’s plans see this growth accelerating, with investment supporting growth in all Streams.

Ethics continues to be of increasing importance for ‘audit firms’ and their networks, in terms of fulfilling regulatory requirements and meeting public interest independence responsibilities.

It is a key focus for a wide range of stakeholders, including investors (both Public and Private), government, regulators & the media; not only in the UK but also internationally. It is of particular significance as BDO member firms drive international relationships through global MSAs and we fulfil our obligations to understand complex family trees, our clients’ and audited entities’ ownership structures.

The Ethics team directly support the firm’s Strategic Framework commitment to High Quality, Independence & Ethics and is overseeing the implementation of new systems to identify and manage risks to independence and conflicts of interest. These systems are to be transformative to how BDO addresses audit independence and conflicts of interest and impact on all BDO Streams and the successful implementation of these systems are ‘Top 10 Programmes’ for the BDO Leadership team.

Alongside the developments in the Ethics team, this individual will be dedicated to supporting the firm’s growth plans in the Private Equity space, for the houses themselves or the businesses in which they invest. They will be the subject matter expert for PE, raising the profile of the correct processes for targeting/understanding affiliates and meeting our obligations under global MSAs.

We’ll help you succeed

The work we do is underpinned by quality. We deliver audits which are trusted and transparent which can be relied upon by companies and their stakeholders.

You’ll be someone who is comfortable working pro-actively and, managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with Senior Managers, Directors, and BDO’s Partners. You’ll help deliver accurate and transparent reporting to all relevant stakeholders as you provide long term value.

Responsibilities

You will be involved in:

Supporting the cross-disciplinary Private Equity Leadership team’s stewardship of firmwide PE activities Working with both the Ethics and Learning & Development teams to upskill practitioners in all Streams in identifying and navigating opportunities and possible conflicts Working with other BDO international member firms in managingMSA obligationsGlobally restricted list such as Brookfield and Blackstone Supporting the KAMA programme from a family tree/independence perspective The PE Designation committee, as its record keeper Guiding PE practitioners in all Streams (as subject matter expert for PE) in raising the profile of the correct process for targeting/understanding affiliates and hospitality/entertainment in that context Working with BDO Global project teams to influence the development of systems to ensure the UK firm’s regulatory and firmwide requirements are incorporated.

You will be someone with:

Relevant experience in a similar role interpreting/applying ethical standards or a similar regulatory framework An awareness of the UK and international codes of ethics Experience of interpreting regulation and how to apply rules in a practical way An understanding of risk management and conflict of interest principles and how to apply these in practice Strong communication skills – both written and oral – with the ability to communicate and present confidently and professionally with people at all levels The ability to quickly build trusted working relationships with senior practitioners The ability to work independently and collaboratively to solve complex problems and drive tasks through to completion. Strong organisational and project management skills with experience of working on complex projects.

You’ll be able to be yourself; we’ll recognise and value you for who you are and celebrate and reward your contributions to our business. We’re committed to agile working, and we offer everyone the opportunity to work in ways that suit them, their teams, and the task at hand.

At BDO, we’ll help you achieve your personal goals and career ambitions, and we have programmes, resources, and frameworks that provide clarity and structure around career development.
