We pride ourselves on the high-quality support we deliver to the Submarine Enterprise and our continued success in this arena means we are actively seeking high calibre individuals to support and promote further development in this area. Based out of our Plymouth office we are actively seeking individuals with a background and passion in any of the following; submarine systems engineering, submarine facility engineering, safety management or safety case development in the nuclear industry.

Role Responsibilities

Day to day, you’ll provide professional systems, safety and environmental engineering guidance and expertise into submarine enterprise focused projects. Below are a few examples of the tasks we have been working on recently and gives a flavour of the sort of projects you’ll be driving:

Providing technical guidance and design support to the AUKUS programme. Design and project management of nuclear submarine facility improvement projects. Identification of new and emergent technologies, with a 50-year look ahead, to proactively prevent the unwanted accumulation of biofouling organisms in future classes of submarines, whilst minimising the impact of any treatment on the environment. A high-level assessment of the impact of an unconventional option to reduce submarine Radiated Acoustic Noise on personnel, systems and equipment, to establish the limitations, shortfalls and the potential benefits that could be achieved. A holistic review of contemporary, novel, and pioneering technologies that could satisfy current and future submarine energy generation and storage needs, to influence and inform future propulsion plant design and architecture. Providing technical support and expertise to innovative 'in water' submarine engineering soulitons for the MOD. Providing Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel expertise into Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) 1, 2 and 3 related projects. Conducting Independent Peer Reviews and Technical Assessments of design and safety documentation for submarine facilities and platforms. Assessing and producing nuclear safety substantiation and safety justification documents in support of a modern standards nuclear Safety Case.

Additionally, there are opportunities to support the Civil Nuclear Sector, as the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) development programme gains momentum.

Requirements

Essential

Experience of Managing Teams/Engineering Projects. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to influence effectively. Enthusiastic, a team player with a ‘can

do' approach to difficult challenges.

Desirable

Detailed knowledge of the submarine ship systems, Nuclear Steam Raising Plant and/or propulsion systems. Detailed knowledge of the submarine facility and associated facility systems and their associated safety cases. Working knowledge of the application of safety regulation, policy and standards, with experience relevant to UK MOD approaches to submarine safety such as: Defence Safety Authority (DSA) Regulations, Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations, Naval Authority Certification, SDA Safety Policy and Management systems. Knowledgeable in statutory safety legislation and how to attain and manage legislation compliance. Understanding of safety analysis techniques, including HAZID, hazard management, functional hazard assessment, Cat and Class, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment, software safety assessment, ALARP assessment. Working knowledge of Technical Assurance/Governance and Maturity Assessment of the Maritime Concept, Assessment, Demonstration, Manufacture, In-Service and Disposal (CADMID) cycle. Experience of working with or within the SDA (ISM, Nuclear Propulsion Project Teams (NPPT), Equipment PT etc). Chartered Engineer status.
