This is a 12 month locum 10 PA post from June 2024 (covering for maternity leave) for a Consultant Nephrologist, with an interest in low clearance and transplant preferred, working in the Berkshire Kidney Unit, based primarily at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will join a team of eight nephrologists and support the current delivery of renal services across Berkshire including contributing to the development of these services. Depending on the applicant's interests, it may be possible to do additional clinics in other areas. Additional SPA time above the allowance will be considered for other activities such as educational supervision and research.

The aim of the Berkshire Kidney Unit is as a leader in the field of Nephrology and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

The Berkshire Kidney Unit has recently been accredited by the University of Reading in recognition of our clinical, education and research excellence.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities:

To provide and develop, with colleagues, a renal service in both in-patient and out-patient settings across Berkshire. To provide on-call cover for renal on a 1 in 9 rota with 3% on-call intensity supplement.

Management Responsibilities:

Active participation in bi-monthly clinical governance meetings within the department. Participation and involvement in MDT and consultant meetings. Participation in activities contributing to service improvement including Getting It Right First Time, the Renal Service Transformation Programme and Kidney Quality Improvement Partnership Developing leadership roles within the renal service, for example lead for low clearance care

This is a whole time post with a minimum of 10 Programmed activities (annualised job plan). The balance between Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities will be agreed with the post holder in the final job plan. The SPA allocation is for personal CME, audit and revalidation requirements including departmental meetings and clinical governance. Additional SPAs may be allocated for specific agreed objectives for the trust subject to the agreement of the Clinical Director.

All Job Plans are reviewed at least annually, with the Clinical Lead/Clinical Director, who is the Line Manager. The provisional job plan attached is subject to review.

Job responsibilities

Based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Foundation Trust, the Berkshire Kidney Unit provides a comprehensive renal service including acute and chronic dialysis and transplant follow-up for the whole of Berkshire. There are over 900 renal replacement patients and 70 haemodialysis stations on our main and satellite sites. The Trust has a renal strategy committed to service development on both the acute site and across the county.

The current consultant team work closely together with shared policies and protocols, constantly developing the service. The unit is highly computerised, with an ethos that is firmly multi-disciplinary and strongly driven towards UK Kidney Association standards by rigorous frequent audit. The post-holder will be expected to embrace the culture of the unit, and of the trust, and work enthusiastically and closely with the existing team to manage and develop the service.

Participation in research, teaching and quality improvement will be expected and development of particular areas of interest will be encouraged and supported.

The Trust is committed to supporting the requirements for continuing education and professional development as laid down by the Royal Colleges. A personal development review will be undertaken by the clinical area lead annually and objectives agreed.
