Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Matron to lead the a mixed London portfolio; including Chelsea NHS wards, Chelsea MDU. In addition you will manage the Skin and Sarcoma CNS teams, who work cross sites. This post will report to the Divisional Nurse Director for Cancer Services.

You will possess relevant professional qualifications plus additional specialist management knowledge, acquired through training and experience. 

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to provide effective, visible, and accessible clinical leadership and operational management. You will monitor and maintain professional nursing standards, to ensure the care environment is clean, safe and protects the privacy and dignity of patients.

Working collaboratively 

As part of the Cancer Services divisional management team, you will be working collaboratively with the Divisional Nurse Directors (DND), Clinical Lead and the Clinical Business Unit (CBU) managers to assure the Executive Team and Trust Board that robust systems of governance and performance management are in place to deliver high-quality person-centred care and services for patients. You will also work collaboratively with Matrons across the Trust to provide a collective voice for nursing and on quality improvement projects.

The post will line manage the senior nursing staff (Sisters and Lead CNS) and support them to develop and manage their teams and have oversight of the resource management on the wards, including overall budget responsibility. You will lead on recruitment and retention strategies across their areas, including leading on, and delivering strategies in reducing the use of temporary staffing.

Essential criteria

First level registration First level degree in a relevant specialty MSc or working towards in relevant subject Relevant formal teaching / mentoring experience Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable criteria

Post Registration qualification in cancer nursing

Experience

Significant relevant post-registration experience, including experience at band 7 Sister Charge Nurse or equivalent Clinical management experience Experience of managing staff Budget Management / management of resources

Desirable criteria

Demonstrable experience in a range of cancer care settings

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria

Clinical Skills e.g. Venepuncture and Cannulation Evidence of good leadership qualities, including delegation and co-ordination of teams The ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English to a wide range of people both internally and externally, often involving highly complex or sensitive information. Presentation skills Ability to innovate and respond to change Ability to interpret and implement new policies into workplace procedures Evidence of commitment to patient & carer involvement in care Knowledge of clinical governance issues and risk management strategies Ability to make decisions, organise & prioritise Excellent interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members Experience and ability to manage conflict situations Evidence of good understanding of NHS plans and Cancer Network working Computer Literacy

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
