Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Specialist Physiotherapist to join our well respected Respiratory Physiotherapy Team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is a permanent, full time post at hrs per week based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital with cross site working at The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch and Kidderminster Hospital as part of the Respiratory Physiotherapy team.

This is a new post to provide specialist respiratory outpatient physiotherapy service to patient across the county with opportunity to be involved in developing the service as it progresses.

You should have broad experience of working with respiratory patients with a range of conditions. You should also have appropriate experience of supervising and teaching senior and junior staff, Physiotherapy assistants and students on placement, as well as the ability to provide training, mentorship and support to staff on Respiratory on call and weekend rotas.

Strong leadership credentials and a keen interest in evidence based practice, service development and clinical governance are also essential to the role. High level communication skills will be needed to ensure effective networking with other members of the MDT including Respiratory Consultants.

As a service we are dedicated to the concept of continuing professional development. Attendance of both internal and external courses to facilitate both clinical and leadership development are supported and encouraged

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside the Clinical Lead for Respiratory Medicine to provide a high quality Physiotherapy service to respiratory outpatients across all sites. This post will involve a combination of both Clinical and Team leader responsibilities and as such, we are looking for an experienced, dynamic and progressive Physiotherapist with proven clinical skills, demonstrating a wide base of respiratory experience.

The post also includes a commitment to the on-call service and requires weekend working as part of the on call rota. You will also be required to be able to travel between sites.

Key Duties:

Clinical:

Tobe professionally and legally accountable for all aspects ofpractice, including the management of patients receiving treatment. To ensure the delivery of careto the patient is of a high clinical and professional standard using a widerange of physiotherapy techniques and extensive post graduate experience, andto encourage members of the team to do likewise. To make clinical judgementsinvolving complex and often multi pathology patients regarding potential forrehabilitation. Such decisions may cause some conflict and financialimplications. To deliver group sessions whereappropriate within area of speciality. To be responsible for owncaseload within speciality and organise all other members of the team toprovide an efficient service considering clinical priorities that can rapidlychange throughout the course of the day. To ensure that patientconfidentiality, privacy, and dignity is always maintained. To undertake comprehensiveclinical assessment, including clinical risk of patients, including those withcomplex/ highly complex, sensitive and multi pathological presentations usingadvanced investigative skills within speciality. Using highly specialised analytical andclinical reasoning assessment skills to interpret findings and to apply theseto the development of individual evidence-based patient management plans. Somepatients will have been referred by a medical practitioner but not examined. To regularly evaluatesubjectively and objectively the effectiveness of the treatment, usingappropriate outcome measures and to decide when medical review is needed and toadjust treatment accordingly. To demonstrate a high level ofspecialised skill and expertise in the delivery of treatment to patients,including highly skilled handling. To demonstrate highly developed dexterity,co-ordination and manual skills for assessment and treatment of patients.Appropriate treatments are selected from an extensive repertoire ofphysiotherapeutic interventions Normal Movement, Motor Relearning, manualtherapy techniques, respiratory techniques, use of NIV and exercise therapydependant on speciality. To work in partnership with medical,nursing and MDT to develop services in accordance with local and nationalservice and clinical guidelines. To co-ordinate with other members ofthe MDT to facilitate discharge planning, participating in weekly MDT meetings,home visits and progress meetings with patients, relatives, and carers. This isaccording to speciality. To maintain comprehensive, accurateand contemporaneous treatment records, including valid consent appropriate tothe intervention, and discharge report or referrals for ongoing therapy inanother setting. To liaise closely with otherspecialist teams to provide optimal, seamless care to patients. To act as a source of specialisedknowledge and provide advice to other physiotherapy colleagues and the MDTwithin given speciality. To be an active participant on theevening and weekend on-call service, which includes advanced respiratorytechniques and non-invasive ventilator aids. This may include the treatment ofchildren. Rota will depend on speciality. To provide specialist advice, support,training and mentoring to other members of the multi-disciplinary team and allstaff who participate in rotas / weekend / on call working associated withinthe given speciality. To co-ordinate and ensure effectivedelivery of rotas / on call within area of speciality with assistance of theClinical Lead. With the assistance of the ClinicalLead, to accept clinical responsibility for outpatients within speciality,including management of the waiting lists across the trust. To use advanced judgemental skills anda comprehensive knowledge of physiotherapy interventions to plan individualtreatment programmes of care, reflecting evidence-based practice. Qualifications

Essential

Diploma or degree in physiotherapy. Health Professions Council registration. Appropriate, recognised post graduate qualification/training.

Desirable

Member of CSP. Relevant MSc (or working towards).

Experience

Essential

Completed rotations within each of the core specialties at a Band 5 / junior level or can demonstrate a broad range of experience. Appropriate experience in an Acute NHS setting at a senior level. Extensive and wide-ranging post registration experience within the specialty. Comprehensive evidence of recent, relevant CPD. Experience of supervision, appraisal and development of more junior staff. Participation in audit/research.

Desirable

Participation in service improvement projects. Experience of managing a clinical team/workload.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

High standard of written communication, including presentation skills. Evidence of appropriate personal skills (eg responsible, flexible, highly organised). Evidence of effective leadership and team working. Teaching skills. Examples of on-going and varied people management and supervision. Advanced clinical knowledge and highly developed skills in the specialised area. Thorough understanding of professional, legal and clinical governance responsibilities. In depth knowledge of current local and national NHS issues. Sophisticated communication skills, in order to be effective in complex situations.

A management /leadership qualification or training.

Other Job Requirements

Essential

Able and willing to commute between sites. Able and willing to work across 7 days and take part in on call duties through a 24 hour period. Ability to meet the physical demands of the role. Commitment to working in Worcestershire.
