Leeds, United Kingdom University of Leeds Full time

Earth observation Connected Capabilities Coordinator

Are you an ambitious Earth observation (EO) expert, with excellent research and innovation knowledge, and an interest in the Space sector? Do you have, or are working towards, a PhD or equivalent industry expertise in Earth observation or another relevant subject? Are you interested in supporting the growth of a regional Space cluster in Yorkshire, working with research and education institutes, businesses and government agencies across the UK?

We are looking for experienced and motivated applicants to apply for a position as the Space Hub Yorkshire (SHY) Earth observation Connected Capabilities Network Coordinator. Hosted at the University of Leeds but working closely with our UK wide network of collaborators, this is an exciting opportunity in growing the UK’s Earth observation community. A key aspect of the role will be to translate Earth observation and environmental sustainability applications knowledge from the academic and commercial EO sector across the UK; to diversify and grow this network; and to support research and innovation funding pitches.

The Connected Capabilities Network contains world-leading Earth observation experts who specialise in using optical, Synthetic Aperture Radar, altimetry, and meteorological satellite datasets to measure environmental change on Earth. These datasets are an essential component of the UKs climate monitoring capability and are being used to deliver real world impact and policy tied action for the UK. The consortium receives funding on major national and international Earth observation projects, from funders including the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the European Space Agency (ESA) and beyond. We collaborate closely with many international research partners on funded projects, providing a fantastic opportunity to make connections and broaden your network.

You will have an excellent track record of technical expertise in the Earth observation sector, an ambition to grow your leadership skills; and an enthusiasm for working in the Space sector. You will work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary stakeholders, ensuring successful delivery of the programme. You will have excellent organisation and interpersonal skills, with enthusiasm for working closely with academics, businesses and international space agencies.

Space Hub Yorkshire (SHY) is supporting the growth of the UK’s Space industry in Yorkshire. SHY is collaborating with the wide network of regional clusters across the UK on this Connected Capabilities Network (CCN), including Oxford Arc, Northern Ireland, Wales amongst others. This CCN network lead role will work closely with all these partners, maintaining and growing our close collaboration with the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and the Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC). The Satellite Applications Catapult grant is part of national programme to grow the UK’s Space sector through the development of Connected Capabilities in Space hubs across the UK.

The role will involve significant engagement with universities, businesses, policy makers and industry and third-sector partners. You will be based in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds but will work closely with regional Space clusters across the UK.
