Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic service within Barts Health NHS Trust. This is a new post based at Newham University Hospital (NUH) linked for a maximum of 10 PAs (programmed activities). It is designed to enhance the in- & outpatient service and increase endoscopic capacity and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work within these areas. Applicants are encouraged to develop a sub-specialty interest. Newham Hospital is a busy district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role, serving one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse populations in the UK. We are committed to comprehensive specialist general gastroenterology, IBD, hepatology and nutrition and are keen to have applicants who wish to develop a sub-specialty interest. The post holder will be based on 1 site but depending on the individual’s interests, there could be the opportunity to work across other sites.

Main duties of the job

The clinical responsibility of the post includes ward rounds, outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists and regular departmental meetings. The post is offered over five days and you will be part of the general medical on call rota (currently 1:18 but working towards 1:24) and GI bleed on-call rota (currently 1:6). We are open to discuss any specific or specialised job plans that the candidates may desire, including flexible/less than full time working. The department strives to achieve a collective work ethos to help to maintain long term sustainability to work-life balance. Office space and secretarial support will be available. The post holder will support the delivery of gastroenterology consultant of the week which will involve review of in-patients and administrative work including referrals and vetting of requests. During this time routine clinical activity is cancelled.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are integrated with General Medicine and operate specialist age related (under 75) acute medical wards. We run busy, diverse outpatient clinics based within Newham hospital in gastroenterology and hepatology. Our endoscopy unit performs diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy. It is a busy unit that carries out 3000 gastroscopies and 1800 Colonoscopies every year. ERCP is now based at the Royal London Hospital site. We have a reputation for providing excellent endoscopic training and this post is highly sought after by gastroenterology trainees on the NCEL training program. The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the out of hours’ endoscopy and general medical on call rota and training of junior staff.

Applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (or CCT) by the time of taking up the post or be accredited for inclusion in the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register.

Essential criteria

CCT (or equivalent), or within 6 months of a date, or entry on the Specialist Register of the GMC for General Internal Medicine Experience of working in the UK NHS system within secondary care Wide experience in General Internal Medicine A higher specialist training scheme in Gastroenterology MRCP UK

Desirable criteria

Higher Research Degree i.e MSc, PhD or equivalent

Full JAG accreditation in diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with experience of being part of emergency out of hours endoscopy rota Experience in performing clinical audit Provisional JAG accreditation in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy

Publication record in field of gastroenterology or GIM NHS complaint handling Risk management training Training in and experience of appraisal Critical incident reporting

Detailed knowledge of Gastroenterology services and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post Experience of supervising medical staff Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
