Job summary

We are looking for a motivated Band 6 who has a wealth of surgical knowledge and who is looking to contribute to improving patients' journeys.

The Surgical Receiving Unit (SRU) receives patients for assessment from GP practices, the Emergency Department, Consultant clinic and other primary care settings.

As a Registered Nurse with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, you willbe working together as part of a multidisciplinary, professional team to assess careneeds, and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.

In this role you will be co-ordinating the running of the Surgical Receiving Unit to ensure a good patient journey and support of staff on the shift.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Sister/Charge Nurse on SRU is to co-ordinate the flow of the patients, ensuring that patients are welcomed, managed in a safe and timely manner, receive the tests and scan that they require and move through the hospital to an appropriate location. You will also ensure that the nursing team are supported throughout the shift and will manage any issues or concerns as they arise. SRU is a friendly and supportive place to work with a very fast pace due to taking emergency admissions and having many patients pass through the unit 7 days a week. We are looking for an experienced Band 6 Registered Nurse to join the team, who has an interest in emergency general surgery. The shifts are days and nights and you will be expected to work a mixture. A passion for the delivery of high-quality care is essential for supporting the patients who pass through the unit. As a Band 6 registered nurse you will be required to demonstrate the ability to lead and motivate others in the absence of the Unit Manager. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are imperative. You will need the ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively. You will show an understanding of the role and how you can effectively lead a team. The ability to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans is essential. An ability to make decisions quickly and perform well under pressure is an essential part of the role.

Qualifications and Training

NMC Registered (Level 1)

Desirable

Diploma / degree in nursing or on a pathway Mentorship. Leadership experience or training

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

Evidence of meeting PREP requirements Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care Knowledge of clinical governance Knowledge of individual responsibility to health and safety and clinical risk.

Desirable

Awareness of the NHS plan and current initiatives. Knowledge of ICO initiatives within Torbay Trust. Negotiation skills. Diverse and adaptable communication skills to enable effective communication with the MDT.
