Reporting to the Clinical Site Director, the Lead Bed Manager will be responsible for leading the Bed Management team to optimise capacity and patient flow across our hospital. The post holder will work with the Head of CSPs, Lead Discharge Coordinator,  and the wider operational and clinical team to ensure patients are located in the right place at the right time with the right staff to obtain the right treatment and care. The post holder will promote the development of an open and engaging culture for patients and staff that encourages excellence in clinical practice, facilitates team working and multi professional care delivery. This will ensure that GOSH is able to treat as many children and young people as possible in a timely manner, achieving our aim to go ‘above and beyond’. 

Main duties of the job

Safe patient placement and site wide patient flow. 

·        Ensuring the safe placement of patients  on elective and emergency pathways working in partnership with the clinical teams, leading on policy development and standard operating procedures to support this

Managing information and data related to patient flow

Leadership and excellent negotiating and communicating skills

Academic/Professional qualification/TrainingEssential criteria
  • Clinical qualification (Registered Nurse or health care professional) or equivalent experience of clinical bed management within a tertiary paediatric environment
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development
  • Completion of a management or leadership programme or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree or working towards
Experience/KnowledgeEssential criteria
  • Experience in a relevant children and young person’s environment
  • Experience of Clinical Bed Management and Patient flow
  • Experience of leading a team and managing staff
  • Expert in handling clinical incidents, risk management, patient safety and complaints, engaging with children, families and healthcare professionals
  • Experience in managing conflict and negotiation
  • Experience of working with children and families to improve patient experience
  • Experience of participating in major incidents and other time critical situations
  • Expert knowledge of Referral to Treat and other operational targets within the NHS
Skills/AbilitiesEssential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to develop staff through mentoring, coaching and clinical supervision
  • Ability to problem solve and manage complex situations
