Job overview

We are looking for a motivated Specialist Clinical/Counselling Psychologist or CBT Therapist to join the Berkshire Traumatic Stress Service (BTSS). BTSS is a specialist service providing assessment and treatment for adults with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). 

You will provide a specialist psychological therapy service for clients of the Berkshire Traumatic Stress Service, experiencing symptoms/difficulties consistent with PTSD or C-PTSD. This will involve specialist and expert psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based treatment (trauma focused CBT, EMDR, NET and compassion focussed therapy, in both group and individual formats), as well as, offering advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to multidisciplinary mental health staff, IAPT clinicians and other, non-professional carers. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge/skills in Trauma focused CBT, EMDR, NET and Compassion Focussed Therapy. 

You will be part of a dedicated and friendly team of psychologists and CBT therapists committed to providing the best care for traumatised individuals.

You will be based at Erlegh House on the University of Reading. The location has plenty of car parking, access to green spaces and local shops and restaurants.

We offer a blended model of delivery including face to face and online working from our well-resourced clinic space or from home when appropriate. 

Main duties of the job

1. To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the BTSS based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including clinical interview, self-report measures, and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s car

2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s PTSD and complex PTSD based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, and employing methods based on evidence-based practice and NICE guidance

3. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual’s presentation.

Holder of HCPC registered Clinical/Counselling Psychology qualification and hold current HCPC registration

OR Holder of a BABCP accredited CBT qualification and are a BABCP accredited CBT therapist 

OR Trainee Clinical/Counselling Psychologist in final year with pending qualification and HCPC registration on completion of degree.

Evidence of working with people who have experienced common mental health problems, across the lifespan and from different cultures.  Evidence of experience of working with traumatised people including those with PTSD and C-PTSD Evidence of specialist skills in treating PTSD and trauma related psychological distress within the NICE guidelines

Essential criteria

Holder of HCPC registered Clinical/Counselling Psychology qualification and hold current HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist OR Holder of a BABCP accredited CBT qualification and hold current BABCP accreditation as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist OR Trainee Clinical/Counselling Psychologist in final year with pending qualification and HCPC registration on completion of degree. Training in evidence-based psychological therapy for PTSD

Desirable criteria

Psychology degree Post graduate certificate in evidence based psychological treatments and eligible for BABCP accreditation

Essential criteria

Evidence of working with people who have experienced common mental health problems, across the lifespan and from different cultures. Evidence of experience of working with traumatised people including those with PTSD and C-PTSD Evidence of developing professional relationships with community agencies.

Desirable criteria

Experience of other models of therapy including Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) and compassion-focussed therapy (CFT) Experience of running therapeutic groups Experience of designing and disseminating teaching and training Experience of working in Primary Care Services Experience of working in the local community Experience of service development, research and service evaluation Evidence of providing specialist consultation and liaison with other services, including non-psychologists, third sector organisations, service users and carers.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

Evidence of specialist skills in treating PTSD and trauma related psychological distress within the NICE guidelines Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including telephone skills Received training on assessment/management of risk and carried out risk assessments within scope of practice Is computer literate Demonstrates an understanding of common mental health difficulties and social care needs. Evidence of specialist skills in evidence-based therapy including CBT and/or EMDR and ability to evaluate theory and put into practice Able to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients High level of enthusiasm and motivation for working with people with PTSD and C-PTSD Ability to work within a team and foster good working relationships Ability to use clinical supervision and personal development positively and effectively Ability to work under pressure Regard for others and respect for individual rights of autonomy and confidentiality Ability to be self-reflective, whilst working with service users, in own personal and professional development and in supervision Ability to manage own caseload and time
